New ati/radeon core?

the 580 was developed by a separate team. It isn't the same core.
And no, a new core cannot be just a speed bump. Thats like saying the ti4200/ti4400/ti4600 were all different cores. They weren't.

No, new cores are not speed boosts. If that were the case, in terms of processors, a 3.0 Ghz Prescott would be different than a 3.6 Ghz Prescott, when in reality they are the same core.

I think I may have confused people with what I meant. I'm saying it's the same core in a sense of the R9700 and 9800 being the same core or the GeForce 7 series using the same core (G7x). But it is indeed a 'new' core hence the R580 core name rather than R520

As far as i know, no, they are not like the 9700 and 9800 were basically the same core, nor are they the same core like all 7800's are...

Well it uses the same core naming scheme so they can't be that different same design team or not, all I know is that it's a refresh with most likely 16 pipes with 3 ALU's (48 pipes effectively)

r500 has very little in common with it.

I imagine there will be a large performance boost, more so than any other refresh (this is all presumption however)

Thats my point. r5xx doesnt mean "same chip with added goodies". These two cores were developed by two different teams, somewhat at the same time. Again, as far as I know, r580 is not a refresh of the r520.

The R520 and R580 were developed concurrently by two different teams. However, I don't believe that ATi had planned to release R580 this soon, but with poor yields on the R520, and unable to get more than 16 PP with any reasonable clock speed or yield, they were forced to debut R580 as the refresh product.
