New Apple 23"

I'd say wait a while until they get better revisions, these are bound to have problems just like the 2407s if they are indeed new. The 23" Cinema Displays before had problems too.

What's the difference between these and the old ones? Response time? I think my ACD 20" is 16ms

Apple is listing different specs than LG (who makes the panel), but...

700:1 vs 400:1 contrast, 400cd/2 vs 270 cd/2, 14 ms vs 16 ms (LG says 12ms)...

I've really put off a new panel for ages and my school discount only works through this month. Since this LG panel came out 2-3 months ago, maybe the luck will be decent.

EDIT: Good question on a new model. I'd only get one if they could guarantee I got a new panel. But as you said, how can you make sure since the model # hasn't changed?

Brightness went from 270 to 400.

Contrast went from 400:1 to 700:1.

Response time went from 16ms to 14ms.

Main question I have is: how do you know that you've bought the updated model? They didn't change the model number (M9178LL/A).

Ok, might just be a rumour, but I've had some people tell me they did the silent spec upgrade a couple of weeks ago. So, I might just buy one of the 23" ones and then use a Spyder to make sure the specs are right.

The upgrade isn't exactly ground-breaking, I was worried that it would be a lot better :D Nice for those who purchase one now however

Well, considering they always use IPS panels I think, this is as good as they could do. It would have been nice to include HDCP support, though, but in my case it wouldn't really matter anyway I guess.

no one is using the new LG panels, only philips which is using a toned down version.

the LM230WU3, that specifies 700:1 contrast ratio.

There was a much higher speced 23" LCD module with the same model number but Ive no idea what happened to it (it cost alot more than 24" panels from samsung though)

23" AS-IPS
1600:1 contrst ratio (with DCR)
500mcd
6ms/12ms (g2g/worst case)

are we sure the new 23" doesnt have hdcp?

seems crazy they would refresh these widescreens without adding it...

HDCP isn't listed in their spec sheet. You can figure the rest out.

I've been eagerly monitoring their forums to see if recent buyers are reporting pink/blue cast issues. So far so good. Up until the announcement, an Apple display wasn't viable for me but now it is.

I am so sick of the reports from the Dell camp about things aren't working up to par. Stupid Dell can't even get it right and to make matters worst, they have some guy named Chris M. lying through their forums about it being fixed and done with.

Well, I'm moving in the next week, but once I do I'll be getting a 23" one. :) So I can check on the pink/blue cast stuff...

Yeah, no HDCP... But some of us have TVs for watching content that might require it anyway.

The absence of HDCP killed it for me. I'm really tempted to get the 23" or 30" but I can't bring myself to spend that kind of dough on a monitor I hope and expect to last a couple years with Blu-ray and HD-DVD just around the corner. Sure I expect to watch most things on my TV but I want to be able to pop something into my computer drive and not worry about whether it will play. I guess Apple marketing has suffered a case of amnesia; wasn't 2006 being touted as "the Year of HD" by Apple earlier this year?

I've never seen so many people clamor for something that amounts to absolutely nothing. By the time you go and buy your HDCP vid card and your HDCP OS and your HDCP DVD it will be time for a new LCD... And who knows if 1080p DVDs will be available once you do have it working. And you'll want the 42" LCD by that time anyway which will tempting with a Dell coupon. Always is.

As far the Year of HD goes, the 23" is great for VIDEO EDITING the HD which is what it's ultimately designed for.

The computer will still play HD-DVDs at a lower-res level. And it's not like watching HD-DVDs on it will be unimpressive either. It will be sweet for a relatively small LCD. This is not a 50" plasma.

So, for the 5% usage scenario, you still can watch AWESOME video.

As many people on this board have said, future-proof for them is owning something that isn't totally worthless and tacky looking in 5 years.

The apple 23" will STILL be worth something. And you won't regret that you bought the cheapo-plastic brick because it was $100 cheaper and had "HDCP."

And as far as the 30" goes, it's resolution isn't HD anyway so what difference does it make? The 30" has to scale the HD which is another potential problem area. AND, you can a 30" for $1799 if you can get an educational discount. AS CHEAP as the DELL.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more...

If I bought a 23" TFT today I'd expect it to last for atleast 4 years, probably longer. And in the next 8 months everything will be HDCP compatible except for maybe the graphic card. But thats because I don't game alot. But as said, first titles won't be using HDCP so that doesn't matter in the beginning, when they do start with HDCP everything will have HDCP support.

Theres a huge difference in quality with HD compared to regular DVDs which is about what will be outputted instead of HD. HD will certainly be unimpressive on non-HDCP monitors (when HDCP is required). No question about that.

50" plasmas would never outperform a 23" LCD in terms of resolution. So the 23" LCD will give you a far better image. And the 50" would probably not run in native resolutions - and according to you (it seems) that would make it completely worthless

And saying that the 30" wouldn't be great just because it doesn't have 1080p is ridiculous.
And since quad-core is around the corner it might be possible to upscale 1080p to run on a 30" naitvely. Just as people do today with DVDs - with great results.
That would probably make the 30" one of the best HD-monitors in the world.

Don't think I'm defending HDCP, HDCP is pathetic. But us mortals have to adjust.
We either buy it or hope that it gets fixed some other way.
I have a rule of thumb though. And thats not to pass up a great deal just because the lack of HDCP. But thats me (and keep in mind that I'm not gonna buy a 24" TFT).

That said, it won't be fun if HDCP isn't fixed some other way or is fixed in a very expensive or cumbersome way. The thing that makes me believe that it won't is that HDCP is cracked. It has been for years. And implementing HDCP would therefore just create badwill from customers and not solve anything at all.
That has of course not stoped them before but hopefully it will be cracked in software before they start to use HDCP - because that will certainly make HDCP utterly usless (even in their minds)

HDCP on computer monitor is a non issue for me. Only use is BluRay/HDDVD which there is no guarantee either format will even get off the ground.

The only thing that might ever 'require' HDCP support will be high def movies on Blu Ray OR HD DVD, and didn't they just say they'd backed off until 2010 on the downsampling anyway? Why would a gave ever need it? It's not like you can pirate a game over the video connection.

Anyway, for like 90% of people it's a non-issue. I much prefer to watch movies on a bigger screen. (Right now I'm using a laptop for that since I'm in the middle of a move, but it's not my idea of fun).

Anyway, if you need a monitor to use as a...computer monitor...the 23" Apple looks pretty good, imho. :)

You must seriously have your head in the sand if you think HDMI/HDCP won't appear on the computer platform for years. Look around, it's already here. Monitors sold by Dell, Gateway and other manufacturers are already selling with HDMI/HDCP. Video cards are starting to come out with them. Blu-ray and HD-DVD equipped computers are starting to appear as well. Sorry, I didn't run out to buy those Pentium D systems when I knew Conroe was around the corner. Sometimes, it pays to wait.

First of all, thank you for deciding for me what I should be watching high-def material on. I'm glad to learn that I'd be wasting my time if I watched it on anything smaller than a 50" screen. Can you also tell me what I should name my first-born?

Secondly, HD-DVD played at a lower resolution isn't HD-DVD! Why should I be satisfied with being able to play a high-def format at a reduced resolution?! I guess if I buy a Ferrari and it's electronically speed limited so I can't drive it faster than 60 mph, I should be OK with that because, hey, I'm still driving a Ferrari? Right.

Where did I say I bought something else instead of the Apple Cinema Display? I said I didn't buy the Apple, I didn't say - nor did I - buy something else. I've decided to wait a couple months until January when I'm confident - confident enough to wait - that Apple will introduce new monitors. This is the second round of price cuts to the current monitor line and there won't be a third. The next step will be new monitors with HDMI/HDCP. I can wait a couple months.

And why would you have to scale it? You can play the HD video in a window, which is what I'd do. Yes, it'd be nice to be able to play full screen but it's a matter of weighing the pros and cons. A 23" monitor would actually be a step down for me for certain kinds of images because I'm using a 21" CRT. That wouldn't be an issue with a 30".
