As the number of mobile devices connected to the Internet grows, the number of threats to our smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices grows as well. And guess what? Lookout Mobile Security on Wednesday reported that there are now hacked websites targeting Android devices with a new Android Trojan called NotCompatible, an attack vector previously only used to infect PCs with malware.

1) IF you've checked the box in settings that allows you to download apps from places OTHER than the Google Play store. (This is UNCHECKED by DEFAULT.)

2) THEN you visit an infected website.

3) The website will initiate a DOWNLOAD of the bad APP.

4) The APP will then ask you if you want to INSTALL it.

5) If you positively click to install the app, then you'll be infected.

In other words, this isn't some sort of accidental infection. The user would have to be ridiculously bad at technology.

Yeah, those who are technologically illiterate won't catch this since they wouldn't know to enable the Untrusted Sources (plus many carriers lock that option so you'd need a rooted phone).

It takes almost willful ignorance to catch this.

Well, the app would say "enable unknown sources."

So now, let's say they actually find this. When they check it, Android will explicitly tell them that these apps can steal your personal data and harm your phone. What technologically illiterate person is going to say OK to that?

Like with most things, OE is biggest contributor...

Thats like the Mac Virus that floats around.
You would have to literally install it, right ?

Pretty much. Android phones usually have the ability to sideload turned off unless you dig into the options and enable it (you still have to click "Install" after seeing a lot of scary messages about your data being stolen.

And a lot of Android phones even have side-loading disabled by the carrier so it would literally impossible to install this.

this is the reason most people get iphones. so they dont have to deal with identity theft from insecure android phones

I just like the simplicity and the integrated FaceTime and iMessage.
And its very very Snappy in touch response. And thats about there it all ends.

Battery Life sucks, this not being able to unlock them unless they want you to sucks even more. But they starting to allow iPhones slowly to be unlocked more it still sucks.
Because you need an AT&T account to do so.

I am looking into the WP7 or 8 at the moment since i played with them they seem to be snappy. They just need to work Tango integrated and something like iMessage.

AND i will jump boats LOL

Android needs to get rid of this annoying Screen Touch lag ... Its driving me nutts with 3 Androids i owned.

Well, the Mac virus poses as an Anti-Virus program (Like 90% of Windows viruses), so it's much simpler.

Granted, in Windows you still have to install it and click yes to the "unsafe from interwebz" pop up and the UAC pop-up..... so why are people so stupid again?

Flashback (mac malware) was a driveby download. Required no user interaction other than visiting an infected site, mostly wordpress blogs.

I got a free subscription to Norton for Andriod, so I loaded it to play around. It actually works pretty well, I don't even know it's there until I install an app and Norton takes 5 seconds to scan it before the install.

Now, I have no need for an antivirus on my phone because I'm not an idiot. I'd never purchase the software, but for free I thought I'd try it.
