I am trying to make a new computer for under $1800. I am down either between the AMD X2 4400+ and then a X850XT PE for $399 at newegg. Or AMD 3700+ and then Nvidia 7800GTX.

Go with the 3700/7800.. By the looks of your choices in videocards Looks like your into gaming.. By the time Dualcores start to show its potential in games. There should be more choices in dualcores @ lower prices.. eh? :)

What is the clock?

2.0Ghz

probably 512K , they aren't gonna put out 256K cached dualies anytime soon. Maybe someday when their are socket 939 dual core semprons, and intel puts out dual core celerons.

wait until the end of the month, the X2 3800+ is coming out @ $345 :) :)
SWEET.

you made my day! i know what im getting myself for my birthday!

to answer your question - what do you do most with your computer? if the answer is game, go GTX. if you multitask a lot OUTSIDE of aim and firefox (ie, video encoding, image editing, ect) get the x2.

i personally would get a 3700 and xtpe and put the rest of the money towards another LCD, i <3 dual display.

what do you have now, and will you game a lot with it?

I have a old compag 7000
1.33GHz AMD Thunderbird
x2 AGP ATI XTASY 9200se 128mb
640MB DDR-2100 (128MB + 512MB)
Pioneer DVR-106 4x DVD+\-RW (I flashed it and now only burns at 2x)
Generic DVD-ROM 8x
60GB Hard drive
Hitachi 120GB Deskstar
Soundblaster True Live 64-Bit (something close to that name)
Floppy Drive

Truth is I do game...but could never really even afford a high-end machine. What, I really want is a machine I can overclock. This is of coarse after I learn how to overclock. I want it to be a machine that would make the high-end machine owners envy; but without the high price tag. But, I do like to us compression programs for my movies...so I can put them on my hard drive in a H264 format.

yeeeeeeeeees! 3800+ X2 omg <3 <3 AMD I can afford to buy it and OC with it :D I bet it will do 2.2Ghz on air easy! cheeeers

the specs on the 3800+ = 2 ghz 512 kb L2 cache X 2 :), oh and if you need something to tide yourself over for a while, while waiting for dual cores to drop in price, pick up an HP from compusa, you can get a 3400+ complete computer for around $130 but shipping is gonna be another $60. Pair this computer with the 7800 and you will be set until the dual cores become affordable.....a 3700+ s939 should not perform that much better than a 3400+ s754 anyway.

Hopefully finds a way to OC the HP's, it is also known that HP usually uses asus for their mobos, so the bios might be able to be flashed with an asus bios to enable OC features.

Read up really good then get yourself a 3700+ some good memory and a EPoxX or a DFI MoBO (dont forget that expensive PSU) and then wait for the 7800GT to show up in the reviews so we know what the diffrence will be. If its just clock then get yourself a decent water cooling and youre set.

But it all starts with:

READING and theres a LOT of reading to be done. DFI-Street; Overclocking stickies here; and later on XS are good places to start.

Most overclockers I know spend more money overclocking then I do just building a highend rig. They just can't ever accept a computer as 'done', always looking for a new component that will give them another .001% increase in a synthetic benchmark.

Do yourself a favor and don't be that hampster, on that wheel. :)

Be That Hamster, off the wheel. Dude since when has hamster EVER had a p in it?

Whichever cpu you go with 7800, the gpu is so powerful, cpu will be the bottleneck

Overclocking saves money thank you. When you buy cheaper lower end processors made with the same manufacturing process as the higher end ones and simply add a good cooler (such as buying a 3000+a64 ((150$)) and a thermalright XP-90((45$)) ) then liberally overclock you end up with a cpu thats competitive with much higher end cpus that cost MUCH more. Look at my signature for example. The way I see it, I saved myself 800$.

see, i have too much respect for AMD to fuck em over if for some reason my cpu ever died.
