Agreed. I spent 2K on my pc minus the case and gpu. The 4090 is over 2K. I just find the GPU prices today ridiculous. Or maybe I could get a 4080 for just over 1K and that would be 50% of my pc which isn't horrible but still to much.

If you look at transistor count and watts, your gpu was probably way more than half your computer too.

Not even that, the PCB, copper tracing, regulators, capacitors, mosfets, etc...

At a pure component count on the board there are almost as many components and copper tracing as the rest of the computers systems.
 
I just can’t conceptualize equating pricing of way older generations that just started to do shading to what these cards do now. It is not like a CPU of yesterday basically can do, albeit much slower, 95%+ of current CPUs.

For the actual work or computing being done in a modern game, the GPU absolutely dwarfs what the CPU is doing. Todays GPUs are basically a new entity in other words. If anything CPUs are way over priced for the gains received over the years.

One other way to look at it

A 9700x, 70.6mm of good TSMC compute die + 122 mm of cheaper TSMC io die, come without a cooler, without ram, withouit a pcb, AMD push a lot of the cost on the motherboard they sell you in a separate buy and those went up in price.
9700x launched at $360, for a bit less than 200mm of die.

The 7600xt of AMD, around the same size, 204mm of die, come with 16GB of GDDR6 vram with 288gb of bandwith (good luck reaching 60 on your cpu), nice cooler, launched cheaper at $270.

GPU are about using a lot of cheap imprecise chips on a problem and they are cheap by gflops, CPU are about being really precise and can get quite costly in comparison.

But I am not sure how fair it is to compare the 2, GPU you can copy-paste the same core over and over, end up with only 85% of the chips working no problems, security and other issue being probably of different nature and challenge.
