I just bought a 9800 GTX+ which I received about 4 days ago. There's a couple of things about this card that worries me, and I'll try to be concise as possible.
First of all, is it normal for my 9800 GTX+ (55nm) to reach as high at 84 C at 70% fan speed? That seems pretty high considering the fan's noise and the less power consumption of the smaller chip.
I tried finding the overclocking limits of the card by setting the GPU to 95%~ of stock speeds, then individually core, shader, and memory until I began seeing glitches. I got from 1100 to 1385 memory before my computer reboot itself! I did not see any glitching at 1375 at all, nor even 1385 the little time it was there. So I decided that 1375 was the absolute max, but this is with the underclocked core and shader. Compensating for whatever I could clock the cores and shaders at, I guessed that I might be able to get a stable OC to 1360.
Then I went on to finding my Core's max OC. I got it up from 740 to 800, then tried 790, but nope! There was still some minor artifacts, then 780. I finally stopped at 775 stable; fine with me. Then shaders stabled from 1835 to 1955. Note that during all my trials I always underclocked the other 2 areas to their 95%. So I tried, with a reasonable margin overclocking the core and shader together, but I could only get the core from 740 to 750 stable, regardless of my being able to reach 775 with slightly underclocked shaders. Now I've deduced that I have pretty much no margin to overclock my GPU at all. (During all my OC woes, temp never rose about 85 C)
(During my OC's, I didn't jump straight up. I paced myself between 25 to 6 clocks depending on how high I was in relation to stock settings.)
My third and last problem is Bioshock. I enabled 4xAA via nHancer, but I could only play about 5-10 min. before it crashes on me. Sometimes I'll be able to get to the desktop, sometimes not. I can tell you that when I did get to the desktop, it looked like there was confetti all over my desktop, and also, I got a windows notification that the graphics device driver had failed. This sounds horribly like a dying video card. I've had a couple of Go 7900 GS fail on me in my laptop days. But I can still seem to play the card just fine without any AA. So far, Bioshock is the only game giving me problems, but I will be trying more to discover if this is an isolated event.
So to sum it up:
1. High temps with 70% fan speed.
2. No OC margin.
3. Bioshock errors.
