New 6800 nu, bad score.

I just got a 6800 nu to replace my 9800 np. With the 9800 I had a 3dmark05 score of 900. With the 6800 I got a 1000, when I've seen similar setups score 3000+. So i'm wondering if it's a bad video card or I'm having problems with my other h/w. My setup is:

AMD 64 3200+
2x512GB Corsair Ram
sn95gs Shuttle
2x 74gb Raptors in Raid 0

I have the latest drivers for everything.
Also if it's relevant, the cpu test had score of 800. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Did you make sure to use driver cleaner in safe mode between the ATI and Nvidia drivers?

Edit: That CPU score is horrible, I get 4200 on my 3200+ Claw. Do you have chipset drivers installed.

Yup, did the driver cleaner. The chipset drivers are up to date, but I dont think the bios is. Could that be the problem? (I am always scared of flashing the bios).

It's possible, but I dout that will help. How is your performance in games? If you have HL2 it would be nice to get the your VST scores.

Both scores for the 9800 and 6800 are pretty low. Id say your problem is elsewhere in your setup. Check your bios settings definately, update your bios and motherboard drivers. If all else fails reinstall windows. But I doubt your problem is with the cards.

oh yeah...thats 3dm2k5 at defualt test settings right?

Whoa 900 on a 9800 pro is awful, as is 1000 on a 6800nu...something is real messed up, you should be getting well into the 3000s with that card.

Hm, I have a very similar setup and I am hitting 3500ish scores on 3DMarks. Hm, I would wonder if it was just your BIOS not being up-to-date. I know that in some cases, when I first install Nvidia drivers on a brand spanking new computer it often tells me I have it set as a PCI card, and I have to change it to AGP in the bios and all is well again. Very strange...

Something is way wrong with your system. I was getting >1000 points in '05 with a 9600pro with a 2500+ Barton. With the 6800NU and same CPU i'm 3600ish. Because both your 9800 and 6800 scores are so slow, I'd look at your CPU, motherboard, ram, etc as being the culprit. Virus, spyware???

Well just did a bios flash (which was almost scary, after forgetting to set raid), that didn't help. This system is pretty clean, having a fresh install a month ago with my 9800. System idle process at 98, and I do virus/spyware checks. Any other ideas on why my system is choking? I dont have hl2 stress test, but it I had to run it at 800x600 low details/filtering in order to get a decent fps. I was hoping the 6800 would fix this but apparenlty I have other problems

Do you have motherboard AGP drivers or something that aren't installed? I'd try those.

ya I am getting 4000 3d marks with a 6800, I mean with my amd 3200 at 3.0 with 1 gig of ram and everthing is really really nice and cool, cause my water cooling is really awesome. Not sure why you have such a crap score though. Maybe reformat? or something, not sure, hehe I just wanted to brag my score I guess

1000!? I get 4400 and thats what you should be getting too!

List everything about your computer. What mobo, what agp slot, other pci devicies, what version of windows xp (sp2?), how many processes running in windows background, power supply, bios agp apperture settings, etc.

Infact set your bios to default and adjust your cpu/ram as it should be.

Lastly run everest and see what it tells you about your video card, core and memory mhz and how many pipelines. Get everest by clicking here.

The m/b is the shuttle FN95V2.0, that came with the xpc.
Nothing is in the pci slot, using onboard audio
AGP 3.0
windows xp sp2
Power supply i believe is 220W (again, comes with the xpc)
Bios is default, doesnt allow changing of clock settings, and everything is on default.
AGP Aperture default is at 64mb

I'll get everest when I have time later, but I suppose this is more of some kind of driver or other hardware problem judging by my cpu and previos test scores. Thanks guys.

More than likely, you're having a heat-related problem with your system. (Especially if your BIOS and drivers are all up to date and correctly installed.) You see, when internal system temps get high, your CPU and GPU start throttling down in clockspeed in an attempt to keep system temps under control. Also, the two Raptors might be too much hard drive for that cramped case of yours.

One common mistake some ppl does is setting AA and AF on in the driver. Make sure AA AF and vSync is off or apps control.

That said, isn't u'r PSU kinda low power? 220W I believe 6800NU should at least have 350W

Actually, if the wattage is too low, then his system either would not have even booted at all or would suffer severe stability problems in Windows with that setup.

AGP arpeture at 64? These 6 series like to have a big value from my expierence, It got rid of the stuttering issues when i upped mine to 256. Just figured you might want to give it a try since its a quick test.

Naw, he's good on the power supply, the 6800 NU actually isn't that power hungry (Link ), I have a Athlon 64 3200+ and a 6800 NU running on a 220W as well in my FIC sff pc. Run dxdiag.exe and make sure AGP Texture Acceleration is turned on.

This is what I do everytime I switch Vid Cards.... Very important....
BTW, I was getting ~2700 in 3dm05 with 9800Pro... 900 with non-pro 9800 is way too low...

Well, AA, AF, and VS are set to applicaiton controlled. And also agp texture accel is enabled. I raised the agp aperture, didnt' help. I am pretty sure this is now not a video card setup problem, but more of a cpu or motherboard, because of my low cpu test score of 700.

It maybe a heat problem, i checked the temps after a 3dmark run and its fine. Otherwise, I have no idea whats wrong.

Thanks again for the effort.

This has been really bugging me, having my computer not even coming close on performing on how it should be. I ran cpu-z, the cpu is running at 2ghz. re-updated everything. Last thing is a clean install, which is a pain to do, especially having just done it a month ago. Hardware-wise, the m/b should be okay because it got good scores when it used to have an fx-55 and fx5800(I think) quadro in it. I dont know what could have happened.

Okay, well it looks like the problem is in the power supply and possibly motherboard. 220w is way too low, the 6800 requies at least 300w, you should upgrade to a 350 just in case.

What has everest said about your video card?
Also, raise your AGP apperture to 256. I remember when I had that set to 128 and I would get stuttering problems in nvidia demos, once I raised it to 256, they went away.

When you bought your shuttle, did it come with that raid? Because a 6800 and raid requires a lot of power.

Wattage is important. I found that I needed to use an Antec 500W PSU to get my system stable...but then again, my AMD64 has a 400MHz OC, along with 3 HDDs and 2 opticals.

However, slow performance...but no crashing, is usually indicative of a heat problem.

Oh yea, heat, I forgot about that one, he's got all that stuff in a shuttle.

Do us all a favor and yourself and get a case with a real power supply, motherboard and fans. Unless you really like the tiny shuttle.
