What do you think about this system? I am only upgrading the mobo, CPU and RAM. The other stuff is from my current setup. Thanks for your opinions.

About the same way that I am going to, but diff. Motherboard.

Dont know if this is out of your price range, but Id go with an Athlon FX. Youll have Dual channel support, which is pretty nice considering. But other than that thought it looks great to me.

Well, I chose those components because of the price and quality. I upgraded my CPU from an Athlon 1700 XP and my video card from a Xtasy Geforce4 TI4200 128MB 4X and 512 MB Crucial 2100 RAM. I didn't have enough money to go as high as an FX CPU even though I would much rather have one(who wouldn't if the choice was between those two CPU's?) As for the video card, I had $75 and it was on sale for $150 at Circuit City over winter break, like it is now and my dad chipped in and let me borrow some money. I would rather have gotten the ABIT version of that motherboard because of a few factors. but newegg.com, zipzoomfly.com and Intrex were out of that motherboard. Thanks for your opinions, I went ahead and ordered that list tonight.

I saw that thread as well, so I was going to download it, but it requires a Credit Card, even for the "free" download, sorry about that.

The FX is the flagship Processor, it wasn't made to be bought, it was made to win the Award's that it did, this goes for the P4EE as well. HardOCP recently did a review and they are no better in most cases compared to the Athlon64.

Yes, in some cases they were roughly the same, if not slightly better. But in the other cases were they did win, and cases that addressed the RAM, they won out by quite a bit. I realize that this is a flagship processor, but I in no way had any idea of this guys price range.

Well if he went with a 3200+ instead of a 3400+ that should have cleared some thing's up :)

i have to agree entirely. one is a rebadged opteron (server processor) and whoa! guess what, so is the EE. a rebadged xeon (again - server processor).

if amd gets around to making a seperate core for FX - with it's own special features and shit - not just a different size cache - then that's a different story. but, chances of that are low - amd doesn't have cash to spare. the same speed (GHz wise) A64 and FX are about 3% different at MOST. and that's within the standard deviation of testing results per run.

i'd say your gonna be very happy with the new setup - enjoy it!

The FX-51 is a complete waste of money. Its not like the P4EE that at least sports 2MB of L3 cache. If you want one of the AMD A64's the 3400+ is the top processor not the FX-51 IMO. The 3400+ beats out the FX-51 in several benchmarks, primarily gaming because of the fact it doesn't use registered RAM so it has lower latency. Dual Channel on the FX-51 is pretty useless in the majority of benchmarks and pretty much all real world tasks. The only thing that really benefits from more then 3.2GB/s of bandwidth is heavy applications that can use it.

Yeah, well at least you know that the Newegg banners on the HardForums are working DAMN good, cause I want one really bad. Im practically drooling over it here... but I just got a pretty DLT3C to play with so I dont want to spend any more money on a full fledged upgrade :)

EDIT: Hey IoWnZa, you do realize your a mod... and you do realize that me and you just completely hi-jacked this thread? Lol, I never thought Id join a mod in a good ol' fashioned thread jacking.... :) Thanks :D

Yea advertisements and pretty pictures do alot to sway peoples buying decisions. I know they do it to me too lol. Sometimes i'll buy hardware based on the fact it comes in a sexier box then the other one.

And speaking of hijacking this thread, im going to get really PISSED OFF here in a minute if GoGamer doesn't quit updating their damn site so i can finish my order. It was down and then it came back up and i started to order and down it went again.

I feel your pain.... no really, I do....

I HATE VIA with a passion, please don't buy the KT800. If anything their 4in1 drivers are horrible for installing and uninstalling and reinstalling and non-sense after agp card drivers change or the card changes and what not.. I hate this thing. Go elsewhere, it's more of a hassle than worth. Not to mention the ide port that died soon after the warrenty was up, the fuckers.

(this moves to my rant about Soyo too..)
Only thing I like about it is the stability it has after you fuck with the drivers for 6 months (after RMAing one DOA board) trying to stop it from crashing. Then 7 months later the ide port died, which was 1 month after the 1 year warrenty was up which totally pissed me off.

Ok so I get a board that WONT do 333 fsb like it says in the name in my sig, and then I also get a bit of stability and only two ide drives that work.. Laaaade freeaking da, YES if you can't tell I have ISSUES with VIA! Not to mention soyo.

Actually we are still talking about AMD Athlon64's, we just got a little off track.

If you are in a cash-pinch for this new upgrade. Get the ECS SiS board for the 754 socket and an AMD64a 3200 or 3000+. The ECS boasts some pretty impressive numbers (especially if you can get the updated A version). It is only $80. The problem with ECS are they are some cheap mofos and they like to stick a single IDE cable, a single SATA cable, etc in the boxes. If you don't want to go with the SiS, definitely get the Via. The Nforce3 is an absolute piece of shit that is slower and more expensive than the KT800 boards. You are on the right track with the Abit Max and/or Asus K8V Deluxe boards.

If you are into gaming, I'd suggest you skimp and get the 512mb ram (I'd get the Corsair Value-level 3200 that seems to be rock solid with all the amd64 boards), get the ECS SiS board or the MSI (cheap as hell) board...just so you can get a 9700pro or 9800pro with the extra $150-$200 (9600 is absolute ass).

Wow - a $ 80 mobo comes with SATA? What features etc does it lack compared to Abit/Asus?
