New 4870 Driver Problem

I had the same thing happen to me the other day. I unplugged my 28" monitor which is hdmi and then after that could not get any signal to it after that even with a reboot. I used remote desktop to get into the vista machine and the stupid ati CCC wont load under remote desktop so I couldnt even see inside there to check to make sure the drivers didnt turn off the monitor somehow. I ended up booting into safe mode and doing the vista system restore to a point about 6 hours earlier and it fixed the problem. I am guessing that the drivers are the culprit for you as well. These drivers are ass for now until they issue a proper set for these cards. Try doing a system restore and if you cant do that then remove all of the drivers from within safe mode and then run driver cleaner. reboot into windows and then reinstall the drivers and you should be good. I dont think you have a bad psu or card or else you wouldnt get any video during post or in windows safe mode.

Yes, finally.

Hopefully new set of drivers will fix this, I don't want to have to go through that again.

Gotta drag this puppy up again. Every time I cold boot, I have no signal to the monitor. I have to plug in the wife's monitor, which it will detect immediately, and then plug mine in whereupon it will detect it and it works just fine. Is it just this set of drivers? This is driving me nuts!
 
I was having the same issue you are; after installing the 4870 drivers, I could not boot into vista, the monitor would just go into stand-by. After a million reboots, I came upon this thread, and your solution gave me an idea. I am just using a relatively plain Dell LCD, for which I had just purchased a dual-link DVI cable (I couldn't find the one it came with). I stole a single-link DVI cable off another machine, and voila, boots perfectly. I don't think the dual-link cable is bad, but I do think that when you have a dual-link cable installed, the ATi drivers do some sloppy guesswork and boost the DVI frequency (which is why selecting to reduce the frequency helped), which doesn't agree with some monitors.

I can't be sure it will work for you, but it can't hurt to try...
 
Just for Kicks , use a DVI/Anolog Adapter ....I bet it has to do with the Detection of DVI switching and ATI's Driver LCD Detect Mode..


You wont have any performance loss using ANOLOG...Mater of fact When ever i suspect a driver may be bad with my LCD, i switch it to anolog and use the Dvi adapter to test with.,,

Nvidia and ATI both have simalar issues with this crapola right now...It seems to be Mostly DVI related ...Blank screen at boot / loss of Video after driver install/ cant change from default Display resolution while using DVI on LCD,,Ect.

Symptoms:
After the installation of Catalyst display drivers there is no display available in WINDOWS when some TFT monitors are digitally connected to DVI port of a Radeon product.

Other graphic cards or TFT monitors may be affected.

Cause:
Not known.

Solution:
Currently there is no solution.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available.

So i guess I'll use the VGA on the monitor, I hope it has one, I've never looked.

How in the hell can this still be an issue for them?
