Ill be building a new computer soon, and a have a couple questions about this hard drive. WD360ADFD

THe redesigned version of the 36gb raptor drive, Now i know the old 36gb raptors were significantly slower than the 74 and 150gb versions, but is this raptor based on the 150gb drive with 16mb of cache? Or is it the same drive just with extra cache?

I really dont need much storage space and this drive would only be for the OS, and games/ select apps, And i would probably go for 2 for raid 0, since im going for more performance not storage.

Id also buy a 320gb seagate data drive for all my random data.

or now that i though about it since newegg is having that $50 mail in reabate on the 150gb raptor, that would end up costing only $30 more than the 74gb, and $20 cheaper than the dual 36 gb raptors, twice the storage for almost the same price, have to think about that also. hmm

doesnt seem like much to think about if you ask me, since you are in the market for it.

150GB, go go go.

Raptors are are a waste of money anyway, if you are going to throw it out the door either paypall it here and I will send you some unopened PS2 controllers I have laying about or get the 150. You can never have enough storage, and even if you think you have enough, triple that and that is what you will need in a year.

RAID-0 != more performance in typical desktop access patterns.

Yes, the WD360ADFD is a significant improvement over the WD360GD, but it still is not cost effective to run them in RAID-0 with the goal of outperforming a WD1500ADFD in localized random access (starting your computer, loading games/levels, loading programs, etc). Two WD360ADFD's in RAID-0 with a 7200RPM storage drive would be an awesome photoshop scratch disk, or a scratch disk for a video editor, but the random access performance of RAID-0 isn't there. In addition, you accept a laundry list of additional risk/problems when running RAID-0 on a system volume.

If you need more than 36GB on a system drive, RAID-0 isn't the answer, one of the 74 or 150GB units is.

ok, thanks for the replies i think ill just go for the 150gb raptor

someone's a little jealous and doesnt have one for themselves... :p

seriously...raptors are amazing hard drives...they ARE fast, they ARE worth every penny...

No, they wont be faster in raid for desktop performance, but its going to be faster loading the OS, levels in games etc.

So running two raptors in raid would just allow for more storage while maintaing the same performace?

While increasing your risk of data loss, introducing more heat into your case, requiring additional driver/BIOS complexity, greatly complicating disaster recovery, and dramatically increasing your cost, yeh you do get more capacity out of running RAID-0.

Looking on ZZF right now, 2X WD740ADFD = $324, while 1x WD1500ADFD = $246. Looking on the 'Egg (*shudder*, but ZZF doesn't carry the 360ADFD), 2x 360ADFD is $218, while the 740ADFD is $169.

This is in the sticky for the reason, and unlike many of my other statements on RAID-0 it doesn't create much controversy:

For desktop users and gamers with high performance as a goal, it is better to buy a faster and more expensive single disk than it is to run two slower drives in RAID-0.

Amen.

Can't wait till the end of the day.
Dual core is here, and WD740ADFD is coming within hours.
Yippie.
(ok, off topic)

I would get a single raptor.. the new revised 74gb raptors look awesome.
Same performance specs (listed on wdc.com) as the 150gb raptor.. just smaller.

So does anyone know what the performance is like?

I have a FX-55 @ 2.9 system with a 1500ADFD and will be getting in a 36GB ADFD today!

The 36GB is going into a system with a 4800+ @ 2.4Ghz.

We should all get HDTACH scores along with load times of BF2.

I will get the score for the 150GB and 36GB, anyone care to do the 74GB one?
