New 3.4E = crappy HL2

I replaced my 2.6C @ 3.3/254FSB with a new 3.4E and have it @ 3.6 / 260FSB. I booted up HL2 and it plays like cr*p, and the audio before I load a game makes little snapping noises (the agp/pci bus is locked.) Most of the time it looks ok, but once I get near lights, especially bright ones it gets very choppy at the same settings as I had before w/ my old CPU and lower speeds. Tried a Steam reinstall, no luck. CoD & Doom3 sem to play the same, any ideas? Attached are my readings...I know my CPU temps suck I have a XP-90 on the way...also it doesn't seem to be throttling durring games, i check that with Throttlewatch. I Prime95's for about 5 hours w/o errors even though my temps are really bad (51I/64L) - i have an XP-90 on the way...

im running BIOS 1019 im pretty sure it's fully supported, it also has the divider unlock.
 
did you do a clean reinstall of windows? are your chipset drivers installed? is your video card overclocked? since prescott is a power hog, maybe its taking power away from your video card and therefore hurting your video card OC.

i was trying not to have to do a clean install of XP. i reinstalled the latest chipset drivers, and it still does it. My PSU is Thermaltake 560w Silent Purepower. And it does it reguardless of my cards default or OC clock. It's only HL2 so fart that gets messed up, Doom 3 and CoD don't show the same odd stuttering.

agreed.... i always make it a habit as well when i install a mobo to redu the system from scratch...

personal pref but it does keep the system clean
 
got an extra hard drive lying around? do a quick install of windows on a spare drive and see if it gives you the same problem. that way, you dont loose your windows install and you will know if it is a software or hardware problem

those dont always fix the problem. ive done those multiple times and when it finished, my problem was still there about half the time.

can i ask why you thought it would be smart to write a worthless post since you have no idea how much I paid for the proc? not to mention it doesn't help me at all.

If after I get my XP-90 and that doesn't help with the prob. I will probably reinstall XP. just doesn't make sence that it's only with HL2 and not my other games...
 
So the CPU was the only hardware change? If so reinstalling Windows XP for that is not needed.

yeah, the only thing i did was swap my 2.6C for this 3.4E. which coincidentally runs 10-12 degrees hotter than my northy and thus the XP-90
 
is this an engineering sample?

I only ask because your FSB dont make alot of sense

2.4c = 12x254 = 3048mhz not 3.3
3.4e = 17x265 = 4505mhz not 3.6

2.4c = 12x280=3.3ghz
3.4e = 17x212 = 3.6ghz

now even though the cpu speed is higher on the 3.4 ive sacrified 68mhzx2 on the memory.

which means either you have had two engineering samples or your FSB settings are off. In which case you may see a bigger performance decrease because of the reduced memory bandwidth

this 3.4E is D0 stepping which the P4C800-E can make run at either 17X or 14X :D

even at stock 3.4/800FSB the stuttering in game shouldn't be cause by the lower FSB. I mean I'm not running it super low or anything. stock 3.4/800 & 9800XT should be ample to play HL2 1024/768 2xAA.
 
I'd suspect your PSU may not have the required juice. Really, just a guess though because it makes no sense why you are geeting such a performance hit.
 
I'm with the other posters... I know it's a pain, but a fresh install of Windows XP may go a long way toward fixing the problem. I know it's just the chip, but this is what I would try in the following order:

1. Make sure all of your drivers are up to date
2. Defrag hard drive
3. Bump your mutli to 17x and leave the cpu at stock for testing purposes.
4. Test, test, test...
5. If it still has problems, try a WinXP clean install (on a spare drive if you have access to one). Also try resetting your BIOS from scratch by doing the "Load Bios Defaults" menu in the Bios settings. Then tweak your BIOS after rebooting to reflect the NON-overclocked settings you need.

i just reformateed like a week ago due to crappy ati drivers...oh well, looks like i'll have to do it again. i will try the other seggestions 1st though. thanks.
 
Sounds like throttling to me. Having to do a reinstall of Windows on a simple CPU change is unnecessary. Swapping motherboard is a totally different story.

Download that CPU throttling program, whatever it is, I forgot, and see if you get any throttling under load. Looks to me like you may need watercooling.

it's not throttling, i checked with Throttlewatch.

i found a fix! all i did was minimize it then go back in game and it runs perfectly. so f'in odd. also, when I hit tilde on my keyboard to bring down the console, it doesn't come down....? it comes down with my other games.

i do have an XP-90 coming. if that doesn't cool it to an acceptable level i guess i'll have to get some water cooling.
