Does anyone have recommendations on a new Hard Drive?
My 2TB WD Green is failing on me and I need to get a replacement. I'm thinking about getting a WD Red 2TB-4TB.

I haven't heard good things about 4TB for reliability sakes.
 
The WD Red 4TB is very new. There cannot be any long-time reliability reports.
 
Reliability is anyone's guess at this stage as they're new.

Green 4TB - 2yr warranty
Red 4TB - 3yr warranty
Se 4TB - 5yr warranty

You get more features the more you pay... features which should theoretically improve reliability. The Se has an order of magnitude better unrecoverable error rate than the other two drives, iirc, for what that's worth.

We use Reds and Ses and both are good.
 
I haven't had any issue with my 3TB WD Red..... cant say the same of my Caviar blacks.
 
I also haven't had any issues with my 2x 3TB reds, but sample size is so small...

They came in a a WD sealed box, with foam packing, the drive was inside an antistatic bag inside.
 
I've been using 2x 3TB WD Green for a almost a year now, they're fast, run cool, if I recall from my benchmarking them they were around the same speed as my old 1TB WD Black.
 
4tb reds are $200 right now which imho is probably the best long term value for storage per dollar. ymmv.
 
I went for 4TB WD SEs, and do not regret it. I have had bad experience with non-enterprise drives for large RAID-array home usage. My 2TB REs have been perfect, and finally WD launched a much cheaper alternative that fills the gap between Reds and RE with 7200rpm drives and 5ys warranty so I bought them. The small price difference between 4TB Red and SE is not worth to sacrifice performance and reliability for in my opinion.

I have had no issues with my 4TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 drives either. But I only use 7 of them in a RAID6 array.

I prefer 7200 rpm drives because I still need about 6 to 8 spindles in RAID10 just to do my normal work without slowdowns at my servers normal load at home. If you never do any demanding work and just stream movies the very slow red drives should do. IOPs is the issue for me with modern drives in my fileserver, even though the ancient gigabit network could have needed an upgrade to 10 gbit/s soon.
 
I was thinking of grabbing 6x 2TB WD Reds for a RAID 5 backup server I'm building, but this new article on TT makes the Reds out to completely suck at anything Raid 5.

If I'm just sequentially writing data to a server, is moving to the Se's for about $40 more per drive worth it?
 
I just bit the bullet and got a 3TB Red earlier today. Hopefully it works out well. If not, I'll probably go with a 2TB WD SE
