hey, I just now put one of my PCs onto SETI, I joined team [H]ardOCP of course, and I will be adding more folders soon. I thought that since this PC just sits in the corner and gets used only a little, I thought I should just go ahead and throw it on SETI.

I am using BOINC manager for this, I would like to know if SETI is also used with the [H]orde. I am wanting to sign up or is this something seperate?
I found [H]ard's team on the SETI site, and joined, and the manager says I am apart of the team, so thats about all I can say...
 
I gave up on seti... all my crunching a couple years back was lost and now I cant get boinc to communicate with the servers so I have retired the one machine to united devices folding. Besides my wife is a cancer survivor maybe the results could come up with a vaccine that will cure the uncontrolled grow of cells.

i used to be a SETI person but i switched to Folding at Home, here's why:

1. SETI hasn't gotten any more time on the telescope for about 4 or 5 years now, all that data you're crunching is old and already finished--Folding at Home gets new data all the time.

2. Fighting cancer has more of an immediate impact, the resulsts page of the Folding at Home webpage lets you see what the computers folding can actually accomplish -- the time-frame to finding Alien life, understanding it, establishing communication with it, stopping wide-spread human hysteria, and then being able to exploit our now friendly relationship would take centuries

3. The probability of finding alien life are very, very low. Next to zero, unfortunately. The likelihood that we help one of the many diseases (Alzheimer's, BSE (in humans), Cystic Fibrosis, Cancer, Parkinson's, etc. etc.) Folding at Home fights against is much higher -- look, there's even a "Results" page

4. We know the impact of cancer -- many of us have friends and/or relatives who have died from cancer, no one's ever died from lack of alien contact.

5. Stopping cancer might just be a prerequisite for finding alien life -- it could kill us all as a medical scourge that is unstoppable. In fact, it could even drain away resources from wider pandemics like AIDS, which would then render us impotent to fight AIDS (or the avian flu, or SARS, or whatever you please). Since finding and then being able to communicate intelligently with alien life will take forever, we better ensure that we are living when we finally do hit the lotto and speek to Alf...


for those reasons, i think you should seriously consider switching to Folding at Home.

also, the community here is (almost exclusively) centered around Folding at Home (and UD as well), you will find very little, if any, SETI centered support or love.

That being said, welcome to the [H]orde, now we just want you to help us fight the roo's! (OCAU, the australian team that is our biggest rival and currently holds the world's #1 spot (we're #2))
 
your reply interests me, I have uninstalled SETI BOINC manager, and will throw this one onto folding at home. I also believe fighting cancer and diseases is more important.
I will join the [H]orde, thanks for the words of wisdom.

thanks for the welcome, I will now go and sign up at [H]orde. I am already folding. looks neat. I just need to sign up with a team now. do I do that through the university site or do I do that through the actual client(program)?

That page has setup instructions for the console client which comes highly recommended here. On hardfolding.com there are also guides for graphical clients, or additions that you can use to monitor your folding client

ok, well I have joined team33, and I have submitted to the [H]orde, I guess I just have to wait for my account to be created....
but thanks, I am currently folding at the moment, but for some reason, I don't see my username on the Stanford site in the team list. does Hard admin take care of that or what? because soon I will be adding some daul proc servers to my name, and as well I will getting Prosser School networking involved on the [H]orde. one question though, I have check my netstats in CSfire Monitor and for some reason i don't see F@H listed in there. is there a problem or does it connect to servers at different times?
 
You'll show up in the Stanford stats once you turn in your first unit. The client will download your first unit which can vary in size from a few hundred KB, to a couple of MB, and then crunch it out.

Once you show up in the list at Stanford, within 12 to 24 hours, you'll also show up on www.hardfolding.com

In the meantime though, you can create a user account on www.hardfolding.com as those are independent of the stats.

You have to submit a work unit before you'll see your username appear. So, check back a couple hours after your first unit is in, and your name should be there. Afterwards, you can go to hardfolding and get you own forum badge to post at the end of your posts like you see a lot of people here have.

Welcome to the team. I think you made a good choice by going with F@H. :)

thanks for the help guys. looks like I'm folding for the [H]orde now. I created an account on [H]ardfolding, I guess I just need to wait for the admin to verify it, or create it, or whatever...
thanks though. I am new to this. but soon though when I am finished with these next two "boxen" I will be putting in an extra 8GHz. thanks.
 
Glad to have you on board. We can always use a few (thousand) more boxen. Somebody in Australia is producing something like 10% of their points single-handedly. Since Logikality's ppd are still down (and lots of people are still down from the hurricanes), wee need more help.

Are you running the console or the graphical client?

 
graphical. I might go to console though. don't know, I think I have enough consoles I have to mess around with here anyway, with running my servers.
I might, let one of those servers go to folding. its a daul opteron, 6Gigs of DDR.
also, I am going to get my networking class involved in folding@H we'll probably put these with the [H]orde, and [H]ardfolding make it to rank one, we are #2 ranked according to the Stanford site.
we have quite a few boxen we can put onto folding.
 
The console is cool because you can run it as a service w/o any console window. So you don't even have to think about the fact that it's running. And if you are obsessive-compulsive (I think many here became so after they started folding), you can run EM3, which is really nice.
