new 2700+ really hot

I just got a new 2700+. Instead of using the stock hsf, i used my old thermaltake 6cu. It has a shroud on it and then an 80mm fan so that it's quieter. Under half load(pausing telivision in ATI MMC), i was running near 63 c, and then the mobo killed the comp. The case temp is 29 c, I was quite shocked to see temps this high. I used some arctic silver II i had. Did i do something wrong or do i need more airflow over the heatsink(which is getting hot btw). Thanks, i'm not really up to speed on cooling and what not, i just want something cheap and quiet that won't fry my chip.

If by this you mean the computer shut down due to overheating, bump up your max shutdown temp. 63C is way too low. Even with the stock HSF and Arctic Silver 5 you're likely to run 60C+.

I have three 2700+ machines - all running stock HSFs and Arctic Silver 5 - and none of them have ever broken 60C under load.
 
I can bump up the max temp, but do you think that I should be getting a newer heatsink/fan? If so any recommendations for a quiet one?
 
I would look first at what Crimand said above. As an alternative I found the Zalman 7000's to be quiet and provide great cooling. The downside to these is the design in some cases impacts the caps, etc., on some boards.
 
just try reseating it and re-applying new thermal paste. You never know
 
Ok, i'll try that. Though i touched the heat sink, and it does was pretty hot, so i think it's just not being cooled fast enough.
 
Try loweing the cpu voltage in the bios if your board supports it. Sometimes boards run high and you can make a big difference in temps by just lowering the voltage. Keep loweing it until it becomes unstable and then raise it back up a notch or two.
 
hmmm...that sounds interesting. I don't know if i want to go fiddling with those however, i'll give it some thought though
 
or you could just check to see what your vcore is set at, just to make sure you dont have it set incorrectly
