Got this bad boy today. I'm loving it so far, except for one SMALL problem...

If I turn the display OFF, I can't turn it back on! It apparently goes into a suspend mode and simply won't come back on. I have to shut down my PC and restart it to get the picture back. Needless to say, this is quite frustrating. Has anyone run into a problem like this? I am using a DVI cable, 1600x1200, 60hz refresh, and I installed the drivers that came with it also. I poked around in the menus but the options are very limited.

Nevermind, I solved my own problem 8)

For anyone interested, under Display->Settings->Advanced->Options (ATI) there are some DVI options. I had to turn off "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays". Now the power button actually works like it should!

I'm going to sleep, I will fool with the panel after I get some rest.

hey, how is the quality of this monitor? Like backlight uniformity and ghosting etc?

Ok, I have been waiting for this monitor to show up at the E tailers for weeks now, where did you get it? I was just about to order the VP930b since I didn't think anyone would get this soon.

How is the picture quality? ghosting, text sharpness? Does the panel turn 90 degrees to view sideways?

I got it at digitallyunique.com. They were about $700. They shipped kinda slow, for some reason the warehouse sent the monitor to their office first and then they shipped it to me. It took over a week to get here.

I am *still* having trouble getting the damn thing to turn on. It worked briefly but now it's back to not turning on after it's been off any length of time. I just updated my Catalysts to the latest version, seeing if this has any effect on it.

I was going to save a review until I had some pictures and got the power issue fixed, but when it's working, the display looks great. I don't play too many games that would ghost, but I fired up UT2K4 and did some deathmatch, it looked fine @ 1600x1200. Any ghosting was too slight for me to perceive. Colors look sharp and images are crisp. Viewing from the side is not an issue, it still has a clear image even looking from 90 degrees. It doesn't have that typical Dell "bulkiness" to it either, the bezel is VERY thin and the panel itself is not very deep at all. I don't see any dead pixels or stuck pixels. It does have rotation, it actually comes shipped in the sideways orientation. Adjusting it is smooth and easy.

The only thing I don't like so far (aside from the power) is the stand is kinda high. Even at the lowest point it's still about 3" off the table. I sit kinda low in my chair so this means I gotta sit higher or actually look UP to see the top of the display.

Hopefully I will get the on/off situation resolved and then I will get alot of use out of this screen.

What about any backlight problems, such as uniformity and/or bleeding? To check this, make 100% of the screen black and dim the room lighting as much as you can.

I really like how this monitor looks on paper, but about the only thing keeping me from it is possible backlight issues. I just got a 204T from Best Buy and exchanged it three times because of this. Most of the bleeding I noticed in all four corners. An interesting fact is that the first three were manufactued in Mexico. The fourth I decided to keep and was manufactued in China. Where was the one you received manufactued?

Thanks for the info SSZ, it is appreciated. :) I noticed that digitallyunique.com has had the lowest price but since I started looking for it they have been out of stock. Not really sure what I am going to do right now, I had been thinking about the Viewsonic VP930b until the 214T is out for a while and they get some reviews on them. I will probably wait a few more days to see if all the places that list them start getting them in stock since they are all expecting them at the end of October.

Backlighting is not bad. I set the screensaver to "blank" and looked at it with the lights off. There is some slight backlight in the upper left and right corners but it is very slight. It's not anything like those nightmare shots of the Dell panels.

I just ordered a black 214T from ZipZoomFly today. It's already showing as being packed so I would guess that they actually have them in stock. Have also been seeing them on Ebay as well if any one here wants to go that route. I should have it in three days at the latest. Looking forwared to writing a review myself.

Hi, does anyone who plays heavy FPS have this monitor? I'd like to hear if you guys experience any tearing, or graphic laggines.

This panel really interests me because it has a nice 8ms responce time.

This is the infamous "black out" problem the catalyst drivers have with certain HDCP enabled monitors and TV sets. I had the same problem with a Sharp 26" LCD TV. You either have to go back to version 5.6 or wait till ATI fixes this. Check out the avsforums for more info. This issue has been around for awhile now so ATI has been pathetically slow in resolving this. Makes me want to just cave and get an Nvidia card.

Ironoutrigger, have you gotten the monitor yet? If so, how is it?

I'd like to know this as well.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply but here is. The Samsung 214T!

Is there bleed through in the corners? Yes! When playing movies in wide screen and with the lights off there is significant bleed through in the corners. DVD movies are spectacular otherwise.

Any dead pixels or sub-pixles? None! Panel I got is flawless!

Ghosting:

With DVD movies? Starwars I and II? None!
With Demos:
ATI Ruby, the hover-bike one? None!
Nvidia Nalu? None!
F.E.A.R Demo? Some. Barly noticable.
Guild Wars and Final Fantasy XI? Yes. Bad Ghosting!
I'm a MMORPG nut and this is bad for me.
Ghosting mainly occures when turning.

Colors are crisp and vivid. Backlight uniformity is good enough that I can't see any flaws with my naked eyes. Contrast is flat out amazing! Blacks are black while the whites are blinding white!

Software? I wasn't too impressed with the Magic Tune program. I had the monitor totally hosed in the color/gamma settings in about 10 minutes. My recomentation is that you just install the Monitor Driver and do all your adjustments via the front panel buttons and with the Nvidia/ATI console.

Overall? If your a hard core FPS geek, imho the 214T may be a disappointment for you. "8ms G to G" is pure marketing BS. The 214T is a 16ms LCD and it shows. CRT still reins king for FPS. But otherwise, this is one damn fine LCD! Even with it's few shortcomings I'm totally happy with the 214T. If I could aford a second one I would love to have 2 or even 3 of these! I'm giving the 214T 4 outta 5 stars. One final note, all the product info we have read says this is a "PVA" panel, in the actual electronic product guide that came with the 214T it lists it as a "Super PVA" panel.

Thank You!

I ordered my 214T from a guy in Ebay. I guess I get it next week. I paid with personal check. The guy did not accept PayPal. $660.00 shipped. I had the 213T and was amazed. This one has to be much better. But I'll let you guys know when I get it.

Ironoutrigger,

THANK YOU for your mini-review. Overall, it sounds like a good monitor.

But I am curious if you can think of any reason that there'd be "barely noticeable" ghosting in the FEAR demo, and yet bad ghosting in Guild Wars and Final Fantasy.

I'm not very familiar with these games but isn't FEAR some action game every bit as fast paced as the other two that did ghost?

Did you run Fear in the monitors native res. and the other two in a scaled res.?

I'm just trying to figure out if there might have been different settings in play(resolution/video card/etc) that would explain why those 2 have bad ghosting but the one doesn't.

I would be playing Battlefield1942 / Battlefield 2 and I don't know if this monitor can handle it.

If anyone out there has this monitor and those games I'd love to get their feedback as well.

I have had a 204T for several weeks now and there have been no problems with ghosting, etc. The 214T has a better response time, so I'd assume it's pretty damn good.

I'm thinking the same thing. I had the 213T and was very impressed. Pictures looked excellent. The 214T has to be much better. I want good blacks and whites for my pictures. The 214T is thiner than the 213T. Looks beautiful, I cannot wait to see it next week. I have really high hopes. Someone in Amazon said that it generates lots of heat, but all generate hit to the touch. This is perfectly normal.

Yeah, the 214t is pretty nice.

But the 'losing DVI signal when powered off and on or switching digital/analog/digital with ATI drivers' is really pissing me off.
It is definitely an ATI driver problem (using cat 5.10). Uninstalling those and using windows default drivers made the problem go away. Nothing else has yet :(
I now have a second (VGA) screen hooked up to my PC so I can go to settings, disable and re-enable my 214t. Takes a lot of fiddling but is better than rebooting the PC just because my monitor was turned off.
No answer from ATI yet either.

Sigh..

The endless driver problems with video cards. I still have a Matrox G550 AGP. When I get a newer motherboard with the PCIe slot I'll get the P650 PCIe x16 version. The newer ATI and nVidia card are heaters for this cold weather. :D

Did you receive the 214T yet? If so what are your thoughts? I need to purchase another monitor since I returned the Viewsonic VP930b that had bad backlight bleeding. I am thinking about the 204T since it has gotten such good reviews, or maybe if someone can convince me I need to spend about 186 dollars more for the extra inch with the 214T.

I'm getting it today. Once I set it up, I'll give you my impressions about it.

I answered you in my original post (Samsung 214T) because this post talks about problems with the monitor. Mine does NOT have any problems. It is unfair to bash an excellent product.

Tearing is caused when your monitor refresh rate and gpu's frame drawing capabilities fall out of sync. Since an LCD has no refresh rate it's caused by your GPU as I understand it. Does anyone know if I'm right about this?

Graphic lagginess should have everything to do with your system except your monitor unless you're refferring to ghosting in which case you'd be hard pressed to find some in an 8ms display.

I'm seriously looking at upgrading to this from my 17" LG Flatron L1710S 16ms.
