New 2.8c system troubles

I just upgraded my system to a 2.8c HT P4 on a IC7(maxII I believe...) ABIT MB w/ a gig of Samsung(?) HyperX 3200 DDR and a 9800 SE Radeon. My intention was to throw my old HD into the new system and everything boots up all nice and pretty like and all I have to do is reinstall some drivers.... yeah.... in my bra.
So the current problem is that as soon as it goes to load windows (safe mode/fail safe or no) I get a blue screen of death, but only for an instant, then it proceeds to reboot. Everytime. Don't know why. I took a clean hard drive and installed 98 on it cause I uh... *misplaced* my XP cd. So... my problem is... I would like to gather some data off the old drive before I wipe it and start from scratch.
Any ideas.....?
If someone could walk me through placing the old drive into a currently running system and transfer the files that way but I've never been able to get a hard drive w/ installed programs and other data to read properly on an established system.
So... any ideas? What blatantly apparent mistake am I making? Any links or info would be greatly appriciated. Should I post this somewhere else??

Why can't you just put the hard drive in another computer as a slave, and copy the data off it. If the drive has been formatted with NTFS, then a Win98 PC will not be able to read it. My advice would be to find your XP CD, or buy one since it seems like maybe yuo don't have a legitimate one, and install XP on that second drive. Then put the original drive in as a slave and remove the data.
 
OK, I tried to load the drive on another XP system as a slave and I didn't get the blue screen flash but it hung on start up every time. I switched it around and tried to make the HD in question the master and the blue screen of death flash showed up again. Is my drive corrupt? It was working perfectly 16 hours ago and all I've done is place the drive into an essentially brand new system. One other error that I think may be unrelated (as in, it shows up when I try to boot off of the previously mentioned blank 98 drive). I get an error when I try to boot normally into windows. "Problem initializing NDIS: You must restart your system." Any ideas? I'm almost at the point I might be willing to just forget about the data and start from scratch but I still have a bit of hope....
 
Make sure that the current one that is coming from the other computer is not a master on either of the ide channels. Then load windows on a different hd. that is on the primary channel. Also in the bios make sure that the old hd. is not on the boot sequence.
