wow... I was so happy, I just started OCing my A643200+ w/ Clockgen, I had it up a 100MHz, and rockstable for like 8 hours on Prime95. So I decide to set it up a notch, I try for another 100MHz and Windows crashes.

I reboot. It gets to the WinXP loading screen, goes blank, the screen looks like it turns itself off/on again, and then re-reboots.

So I clear the CMOS, go back in, set things back to default and what not. Gets to the XP loading screen, does the same thing.

So I boot from CD, and choose to "Repair" the installation (not from the recovery console, but actually repair it).


So, here I am, greatfully still alive :eek:

wow, I don't need it, and it's just too risky. Maybe I suck, maybe my components suck, or maybe this is just too fragile an architecture...
 
Next time, try going into recovery console and tyep in fixmbr for fix master boot record, baring that an repair install of xp usually does the trick
 
No matter how badly I trash my hard drive, it only takes a few minutes to fix. Backups, never overclock without 'em.

well i just finished R&R'ing day before yesterday, so not much to back up

fortnuately, it was only my C:\ partition acting screwy, and all my actual stuff other than windows is stored on a diff. partition

and the funny thing is, after it finished, everything was back to normal...all my desktop icons, exactly where i left them...weird...

especially the memory.... but the insufficient Vcore/ overheating from CPU clock isn't sooooooo bad. I hardly lost datas and corruptions by it.


hey my HDDs handle 50+mhz PCI!! muahahahahahahahahaahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
 
So other people have loads of problems with SATA drives? I have a whole bunch of things that mess up with mine...
 
I've over-overclocked my system to the point nothing would load but i've never had any hd corruption. Sometimes the system would report that a file is corrupted but and xp wouldn't load but thats not because it was actually corrupted. Raher the memory was overclocked too much and it didn't retain the file correctly. Lowering the ram clock for those errors worked for me.

As long as your system is stable while writing to the drive youi shouldn't have issues. Then and again I'm not totally sure if windows writes data to the drive while loading. Also i have no experience with SATA (why would this matter unless your bus was overclocked?) and anything post nf2. Haven't upgraded my core components for over a year.

Just make sure you system isn't overclocked or it's at least rock hard stable when installing anything important (like your o.s.).

holy shit. I just OC'd my HDD? :D

well, i can kind of "Lock" the AGP bus, since i can adjust it back down (w/ Clockgen, and in my BIOS as well, i believe). But the PCI bus I am powerless to change :(
 
Dude, you have the nf3-150 chipset, even though it says it's locked it ISN'T.

So you are really SOL when it comes to oc'ing it.
 
ya, you need to get a a64 chipset that can lock the PCI and AGP bus (nforce 3 250 and VIA kt80800 or something like that)

You'll feel even better when you confidently spell the word correctly, which would be angst. Personally i cant wait till the prices of the via and nf250 boards come down. Of if we get some new ones pci-x.

It's good to hear that the new via chipsets also have pci/agp locks.

lol. well, i guess i'll just have to wait for the new boards :(

but why do SATA drives in particular not like this OCing? People with PATA drives seem to be doing fine (~400MHz OC) :confused:
 
Because the SATA controlor is a seperate chip on the PCI bus, paralell is intigrated into the chipset. So when you up the PCI bus you essentially overclock the hard drive controlor because it is on the PCI bus.

theyre all part of the PCI bus...i think SATA standards are more strict, thats the problem

so that means OCing on this system is pretty much capped for me?
 
ya, but it's still a good system.

(it's the only one of mine not oc'ed too :( )
