Backup, backup, backup and backp! Even if it's just a "home lab".

Was doing some modification this afternoon and optimizing my ESXi host iSCSI setup and re-configurating redundancy and paths.....

Since i had to do everything twice (2 hosts, 2 storage, etc....) i was getting boring and one time hit the wrong button.... too quick!

Result: All VM datastore just got deleted. There only 2 files i didn't had in backup....

Currently salvaging the HD with some advance recovery tools i hope i haven't wrote on the "magic" sector yet, at worst i'll have to get the file back from work and run a recovery there also since i had those files delete last week.

Am the kind a guy at work that backup everything like 20 times.... all my old job everyone though of me i was a backup freak. If backup was on tape i always had them in double in case (i don't trust tape but really don't!)... i was probably spending twice as much as i should have in backup equipment....

FML!


Do yourself a favor after this thread, if you don't have a backup or yours is out of date... go do one right now!

It's sickening how many businesses don't have a recent backup and yet their ENTIRE business or practice depends on the financial data that's stored on those hard drives.

WTF?!?!?

And when you mention that they need to back up, they just see dollar signs (i.e. they don't want to spend a single penny)

that is sooo true, but when the server fails they say thats your job why don't we have a backup.. You grin with that ( shit eating grin on your face ) and say REMEMBER it wasn't in the budget because the staff needed nice shiny pens to loose instead ? or joe blow needed a 300$ keyboard & mouse for his poor wrist...

I see this on consumer level & in a business level no one backs up. It's so easy with windows 7 too, plug in the external 500-1tb drive setup backup, plug it in ever few days or every Friday like i do.. POOF ( except every second Friday i plug in a different drive )
 
You have no idea. I've had CEOs crying because their company effectively just ceased to exist... :( Seriously.

it's so sad, because all it probably would have taken was a few $$ in extra backup drives...

Often it's not even the tools or budget that aren't there. It's the people that don't want to take the time to have a backup done.

On my ex-job the CEO never had 5min to do a backup, he was always rushing.
One day he got his laptop stolen.... just 10 years worth of data were lost.

I had the budget, i had the resource, i had all i needed to do him a backup over the network and that all automatic.... but in the 3 years i was there he never gave me the 5 minutes i needed to setup his backup client.

The main reason why i bought a dock for my work laptop.. Because when i dock it, my external 2.5" 1tb drive is plugged into it. Every few days it backs up. if some one broke into my car and stole it while i was on site or somewhere, Id be back up and running a day later ( after replacement arrived )

Now a days windows 7 takes like 2 min to setup a backup plan. NOW A DAYS it should not be an excuse.. BUT i bet it will be,

OH i don't have time, Oh i don't have money right now. etc etc etc..

I haven't backed up my home machine in a month or so. Getting a little worried here, heh heh.

Looks like my after work dump will be put on hold to start a back up.
 
Update:

After 2 days of deep scan of my HD i finally got the data i wanted back, the rest i'll just configure it back again.

I felt on a great software for those in IT: DiskInternal VMFS Recovery, i saw all my old VMFS/VMDK within the .IMG from Starwind iSCSI SAN... only down point it's scan, show you everything and when you click recover it's 700.00$

I ended up using easeus recovery instead just to recover the accounting files i needed.

Again: Backup! Backup and make a backup of that backup you made! It could save you 48h for less that 30Mo of data.
 
This is one reason why i got Roaming profiles and folder redirection! For people to lazy to backup, but it is my job and no way i am taking flack for it if something goes wrong.,
 
I don't know much of what is going on here all I got out of it was always backup my stuff as often as practical. Isn't that the point.
 
I work for a software company that only builds and sells backup software for home users all the way up to fortune 500 companies. I could go on for ages about people not backing up. The only thing worse than not backing up, is backing up and never actually TESTING your backup to see that you can restore.

So I pose this question to all of you that actually backup. When is the last time you tried to do a restore from your backup?
 
twice a month, so... last month? Tests are on the 20th from all 3 sources. :)
If you have not tested your backups, they do not exist.
 
If only other people did that! My support tech's lives would be soo much easier. :)
 
Iopoetve, maybe you would know this, are there any other backup products out there that will backup vmware vm's via the vstorage api directly to tape? I know our's does (NovaStor), but one of our marketing guys wanted to know for some stupid release statement. So far all the ones I have seen all have to stage it to disk first and then to tape.
 
Most stage it to disk for compression, I believe BackupExec and NetBackup can go direct to tape though. Commvault/Tivoli may be able to as well.

I can confirm this. I can also confirm that it works surprisingly well. I know, it's BE, and we knows how shitty it can be, but the VMWare agent is quite good. Nothing more than add credentials and check the box next to the VMs you want backed up. Don't even need to install the BE agent on the VMs themselves to backup, though needed for restores. Does full VSS backup of everything, and properly marks all the stuff like Exchange, SQL, etc... as backed up.

I do stage to disk first just for performance, but it will write directly to tape just fine.

Words can't describe how nice it is to have a full DR image of all my VMs written to disk and tape every single night. And that full DR can be used to restore anything down to individual files if needed. I've already used it multiple times, and it works great.

No more messing with Veeam/vRanger for DR and BE for file backups, all done with one job.
