This is the first time i've run or spliced cat5e cable, and i'm having a bit of an issue. i've created two jack ends for a patch cable to run through the walls, and only one of the plates i got had a keystone jack on it. the other had a plate with screws and wires running from the screws leading to the rj45 port. i plugged a patch cable into it on both ends, one from a router, the second (where the weird port is) into a switch. i'm getting an intermittent signal to the switch. if i plug it directly into my laptop, i get that the network cable is being plugged and unplugged. whats goin on????

Indeed. Screw terminals = phone jack.

I don't get why manufacturers and certain retailers call them "internet" jacks or say they are rated for networking.

okay, got the new plate today, and wired it up the same way as the other end, but i'm still getting an intermittent signal. :(

so i plugged my laptop directly into the new modem, and it worked, so i've come to the conclusion that the problem lies in the cat5e cable i ran through the wall. wonderful. however i think it'll be easy to run new cable. i'll tape it to the old cable and just pull it through at the top, with some assistance in between of course. keystone jacks are reusable right? just pop out the old cable and splice in the new one?

well if thats the case i'll just do what my friend suggested. i bought a 25' patch cable from newegg, and i'll just run that between my router and my switch in the basement.
