Networking/VLAN help

I am not sure how I should go about doing this, or whether I am going down the wrong path
One thing is certain: i want to learn more about networking, and specifically VLAN

Here's text description of my network
Bedroom
Cable Modem -> pfSense box -> HP 1810-24G v2 -> MOCA bridge

Living room
MOCA bridge -> ASUS RT-N16 (running asuswrt merlin)

What i want to do is to setup a VLAN for my wife's MBP, which will connect to RT-N16 via 802.11n

From what I read so far, VLAN is port specific? If yes, I am not sure how to route wireless connected device to a VLAN

In fact, this is my first time dealing with VLAN, so I am doing as much reading as I can, but nothing sink in yet, so maybe I missed something when researching this topic

Let's assume you use 2 VLANs: VLAN10 for you, VLAN11 for wife. On you HP switch, designate Port 24 as VLAN11 Untagged and plugin your MoCA bridge. Now any traffic running across Port 24 will be on a seperate VLAN. The configure what ports you need as VLAN10. Make sure Port 1 going to your pfSense box is setup as Tagged VLAN10 and VLAN11. That will be your VLAN trunk.

Now if your ASUS can do VLAN tagging per SSID then you might be able to play a bit more, assuming your MoCA bridge will pass the VLAN tags. If SSID VLAN tagging is possible, then setup port 24 on the switch as Tagged 10/11 and connect your MoCA bridge. Then on the ASUS you would need to tag the LAN interface as Tagged 10/11 as well, and configure your SSIDs on seperate VLANs.
 
You should also remember that VLANs are layer 2 broadcast domains. Meaning that many services that rely on broadcasts don't work over VLANs without extra config. For a typical home use things like DLNA often don't work. Many LAN sharing applications don't play nice once they are on separate subnets. So, if you're just getting into networking you might consider building a small lab or something.

Just keep that in mind when you're playing. Wouldn't want the wife yelling at you because she can't do something she previously could :)

So what is a typical usecase for a VLAN in home scenario?
I keep seeing VOIP being one of them, and I think iSCSI/network isolation such as DMZ or guest wireless network being other uses
What else?

I think I checked everywhere on the ASUS firmware, and I can't find anything that's VLAN related
Just switched over to dd-wrt and am reviewing all the different screens now
