Networking switch problems

Ok.... I have a Netgear wireless router ( I think a WGR614) hooked up into my modem. Everything coming out of the router works fine. I also have a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 5-Port Workgroup Switch. When i connect my computer directly from the router, everything works fine. But when I add the switch into the equation I can only do local networking. I have the wire going into the uplink port, and I tried multiple cables coming out of different ports on the switch into the 2 nics on my mobo, and nothing worked... just local networking. I went to frys, bought a brand new switch and I get the same problem... local networking with no internet.

Does anyone else have this problem or know a work around... I have never had this problem before at my old house with my old router and switch.

Let me clear this up a bit you're going

Modem -> Router -> Switch?

you're taking your network cable from the router's LAN port and plugging it into the switch correct? I'm not familiar with the linksys switch and you didn't mention the other switch you purchased, but maybe the switch is running DHCP...?

consumer-grade switches don't do DHCP (or atleast not many).
I highly doubt either switch he has does DHCP.

And using the uplink port should have no effect.

you state only local networking; are any of the other devices plugged directly into the router? You can access any local share, regardless of if it's plugged into the switch or router?

Im going modem ->router->ps3,360,computer and everything works fine. But in our office we have 3 computers that need access to the internettywebs, and i need a switch in there. Well im trying to go modem -> router -> ps3,360, switch-> computer 1, computer2, computer 3. When I try it, the things plugged into the switch only get local networking, and cannot connect to the web.

try plugging 2 of the PCs into the router, and 1 computer into the switch.
then see if the computer plugged into the switch can access the 2 plugged into the router and vice-versa.

if not, then there's definately somethin funky, but that will definately limit the possibilities. It will atleast limit the issue to being between the router and switch.

In which case... are you using the uplink port on the switch? if so, have you tried a LAN port? verified the patch cable is good?

Ok well its gonna be hard to hook 2 comps into the router, cause everything is in different rooms. The cable I have going into my computer from the router works fine, but when I unhook it and put it in the switch, I get all the blinking lights, but still just the local connectivity. I tried about 5 different wires and nothing worked... I havent tried not using the uplink port yet.

I guess I can try with our laptops and see if I can get the computers to talk later when i get home

in that case.... check the IP addresses of the computers.
Verify they're all in the same subnet.

I highly highly doubt the switch is providing DHCP (since I'm sure it doesn't do NAT), but it is a possibility I s'pose. Would you be able to provide the model of the switch you replaced, and the one you're using now?

have you tried to see if you can ping the other computers?

Both are Linksys EZXS55W 10/100 Dual-Speed 5 Port Switch. My old one I thought something had went wrong with it, so I went to frys got another one on sale for 10 bucks only to find it doing the exact same thing.

as I figured, it's just a plain switch.

that is really bizaar.

you don't happen to have any sort of MAC Filtering setup in the router, do you?
that's the only other thing I can think of...

only use one uplink port do not connect an uplink port to an uplink port.
They are auto sensing and will not properly mesh.

sounds strange to me. I got the same router. I go from the modem to the router, I have one pc directly connected to the router, then the next goes to a 16 port switch. where I have 4 other computer hooked up. No problems at all. I have even ran another 8 port switch off of the 16 port, and hooked up 3 more pcs with out ever having any problems. I dunno, man.

Doesnt look like the router has mac filtering on. The router is a WGR614 v6 to be exact on the model. I tried connecting another router to the router and that didnt work either. Im not going uplink to uplink... im going port on router to uplink on switch.

Bleh this sucks... I have never had this problem before and usually i was able to figure it out by my lonesomes.

I think its actually the cable. For some reason it works in my computer but it wont work in the switch. When i plugged the switch into the router with another cable, it worked... I guess ill just re-crimp the cable and see what happens.

it's probably because you need a crossover cable for a switch to a consumer router (uses switch ports). a consumer router to a PC or a switch to a PC will be a standard straight cable, but a switch to switch or switch to consumer router would need a crossover.
