Hi. I'm a 18yr old guy with a high school diploma, and I'm looking to go to college/university as a programmer. I'm not sure what kind of programmer, but i'll figure that out this summer. I currently own a laptop, a Media Center, a shuttle(primary pc, soon to be secondary) and soon a i7(soon to be primary). I have 3 LCD on my desk and i love how this enhance the productivity.

But major drawback from this is the lack of a constant on server, eg: i need to transfer my source code to USB, etc. I was thinking buying a d-link dns-323, it plays near $150. What I want from my nas is the ability to have a SVN, FTP/HTTP server and torrent downloads. I am no network junkie; in fact, I suck at networking. (I know the basics, like DNS and stuff alike), thats why I though buying an off-the-shelve product.
I also noticed old p4 shuttles(fully loaded) can be acquired for a mere $125 second hand. I'm sure there a nice linux distro that's gonna play nicely with it (like FreeNAS?) however, I'm no linux poweruser (though id' like to be!), but if it's easy to set up, I'll do it.... All i want is my data to be SAFE. So I want a NAS with more then 1 drive.

To round this up, I dunno what to get, could go with $150 off the shelf product, or DIY for $125.Would takes suggestions, but i'd like to keep the tab near $150. I want a product to be easy to use or/and well documented, I want quite lots of features for my NAS too, as well as protected data, either automatic backup to other drive, or RAID.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
-Vincent

FreeNAS is really easy to setup, little to no Linux experience necessary, however I'm not sure it does torrents or svn. Do you already have the hard drives you're going to RAID, if not, you're going to have a hard time scraping by with only a $150 budget.

Are you going to be living on campus in college? Most places will give you storage on their network you can use campus-wide...

Oh, and good luck fitting all those computers/LCDs in a dorm room. Two desktop systems, a media center, 3 LCD's, and now a file server? You won't be able to torrent in a dorm either.

It's a stack of shuttles lol.
My girlfriends dorm is about 900 sq. feet at Lawrence Tech, and my buddy goes to Kettering and says he can torrent all day. - it just depends on the school.

Yea I built a FreeNAS box for $281 from scratch based on a Mini-ITX board. The hard drives were the single biggest part of the purchase, 2x500GB. Of course now 6 months later I could have 2x 1TB drives for the same price but oh well :D

A P4 would give you very nice performance with FreeNAS, my mini-ITX board has a 1200mhz embedded Celeron and it works great.

Hmm, I'll probably be staying in an apartment, or either at my aunt's house. Either way, I don't need much place since it's organized well. Shuttles doesn't take much room, and my MCE doesn't either.

Should I be building a server instead? I guess I could get away with linux, use an old P4M cpu... It should give me some experiences with linux.
