Hi guys,

I've been asked to update a small buisness network with 4 new computers, and I have to admit I've installed the odd home network, but active directory, exchange and the like of small business server are all new to me - I've been desperate to do something like this for ages, its like a missing link kind of thing.

Now I'm kind of assuming all the hard work has really been done, with active directory and exchange all set up and the server thats staying in place - leaving me to just configure the new clients and point them at the shared drives.

I'm not a total noob, but where I work we don't use active directory. I understand the basics when it comes to secpol, group policy etc, and think I can leave them well alone anyway - seems they're already configured.

Can someone give me an idea of what needs to be done - 1. So I don't break their network and look like a fool, and 2. So I can tell them what its going to cost.

Also, could a lot of the configuration work simplified just by renaming the new PCs the same as the old ones and adding them to the domain?

well you'll probably have to join the new computers to the domain... which you'll need a domain admin's password to do... if they don't have a full time dude for active directory, they probably don't have a complex AD setup. At my work, we manage about 20K computers through AD.. we assign printers to workstations through AD, we insall most of our sofware through AD.

I'm guessing the most you may have to do is create new usernames for the new people + add them to groups based on what they should access.

AD doesn't have to be hard... but if you're using some of the more advanced functions, you can get VERY confused.

The new computer are upgrades for existing users, to be honest I think mostly I can stay away from AD - on the server anyway.

I do however have to add a new printer, so I'll need to assign that via AD?

In order to save time..just to go this website and pour through the tutorials.

No you won't save any work by naming the new PCs same as the old..matter of fact you'll have some issues there unless you remove the old computer accounts from active directory first.

Setting up a new PC to SBS, joining the domain, setting up Outlook...that's easy...takes a whole 30 seconds.

Adding brand new users, if you have to, figuring out what they'll have for rights, groups, login scripts, installing LOB software...that's the part that can take you a while.

And figuring out how their SBS is setup, such as e-mail...direct SMTP or using POP3 connector?
