I am about to do an upgrade of my home networking kit at home. Currently I have DrayTek 2820 router which has served me well for 7yrs.
I do host my own HyperV server at home for email and many other tasks but I plan to migrate this to an ESXi cluster.
So I have been looking at the following switches:
MikroTik CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN
D-Link DGS-1100-16 16-Port EasySmart Desktop Gigabit Switch
So the main requirements for the switch is as follows:
1) Fanless
2) At least 16 ports
3) Must support VLAN 802.1q and trunking
4) Wifi is a bonus
5) Must be managed (unmanaged won't work)
I'll be using VLANs for my vSwitches in ESXi and then have a trunk going to my firewall which bring me to:
Firewall. I'm quite keen on the pfsense firewall they sell:
pfsense SG-2440
but its quite pricey! Amazing unit though. So I was thinking I could use the D-Link or MikroTik connected to the pfsense OR just use the Mikrotik as a switch/router/firewall?
Are there any other firewalls based on pfsense I should be considering?
Requirements for the firewall are:
1) Fanless
2) At least 4 gigabit ports
3) pfsense (although I am flexible on this one)
I'm moving over to 100mb down and 10mb up fibre in the coming months.
The MiktoTik switch/router seems like it is VERY good value for money. I mean it combines a managed switch, router, firewall and wireless for about £150 ex VAT! The D-Link is about £65 and is just a managed switch. I'll need at least 16 ports on the switch.
I'm no network guru but I can get by using a CLI and figure things out if I have to. I know the MiktoTik stuff is more "complicated" than some webgui but I'm fine with that.
I'm interested to hear if the products I have chosen are a good choice for performance, energy efficiency and stability. I run 10 VMs at home and plan on growing that to about 30. I also host a couple domains for email for friends for their business so uptime is always good
The DrayTek has been great but I have outgrown is and it is old now.
