I need a new thermostat and I am looking for one that is networked. One thing I have seen though is most of them have to be connected to the internet if you want to control them. Are there any that don't have to be connected internet?

I have the nest. It's super nice and I will buy it again if this one ever dies or I buy a new house. I'm quite certain it does need to be connected to the internet as it reports your usage info to their servers (from which you'll get monthly energy reports) it also pulls down updates as they become available. It's worth every penny.

I would never plug my house usage (anything) into anyone's smart grid.

We have enough big brother already. They do not need to know what I am using electricity wise or anything. I know how much power I am using by looking at my bill each month. And if anyone wants to know how much I am paying then they can do a FOIA request to get it.

As far as network thermostat... I like these wifi ones...

Thanks I'll take a look at those.

woah, slow down there and put the tinfoil hats away.

Nest doesn't collect any personally identifiable information when you set it up. (i have the version 2 in my house) regional cost per KWh is relatively easy to find. and finding out current/past rates paid by an address is CRAZY easy to get. or was for me, all i had to do was call the local power co. and ask for electrical usage history on an address. they wouldnt tell me WHO lived there or any late/on time payment history obviously, but finding out consumption on an address was entirely too easy, no social engineering required at all.

Who cares if someone else knows how much power I am using?

Plus we are talking about thermostats, not power monitors. So I will state, who cares if someone knows how hot or cold it is in my house?

I have a 3M-50, which is a rebranded model from www.radiothermostat.com that was $100 at home depot, but it appears they no longer carry it. The iPhone app controls it directly, without requiring internet connection, but also, their API's are all public so you can hack your own software to control it offline if you like. I wrote a simple batch script to control mine just to test, but never did anything cool with it.
