If I have a piece of CAT5 patch that shorts between a client and a switch, is there any chance it could harm the switch? or pass on that harm to anyone else on that switch?

I had to make a wire run on the roof so I put it all in a piece of PVC and ran it across. But it is outdoors, so anything can happen.

Does a switch isolate anything that happens out there? Is there an inline lightning arrestor for CAT5? or anything like that?

Eh, if lightning hits your CAT5 run, the cable will probably burn up pretty quickly, and the switch will be fried most likely.

Thats why most people run fiber to other building, because of ground potential difference, lightning, and other freak things.
Make sure you run STP cable outside, with the sheath grounded on one side only.

Anyone can correct me if im wrong.

Yes if you have outdoor runs, or exposed runs, I've always used APC NetArrest/ProtectNet equipment.

You certainly can whack your hubs/switches/routers/NICs. I recently did a large wholesale greenhouse/grower with a whole bunch of APC equipment...the guy had acres and acres of greenhouses, all climate controlled by computers, with data and serial runs all over the place. He was up on a hilltop with lots of granite in the ground, and lost his equipment many times in the past due to lightening strikes. I ran through with APC stuff about 3 years ago...not had to go back since.
