I just picked up a DL385, G3, (Weird, ESXi thinks its a G1) i need a dual or quad port gigabit network card, would prefer Intel. but im not sure what to go for

Dont want to spend more than 30 bucks if I can help it, and Ill be using ESXi 5.0
 
Good luck. The cheapest PCI-E dual port Gb Intel cards I see on ebay go for about $48 each. Sometimes you can get a Broadcom for about $45.

I have a pair I'm selling for $90 shipped if you're interested.
 
You have no shot at getting an Intel quad-port NIC for $30. If you watch eBay like a hawk, you can sometimes get Broadcom dual port NICs for less than $40.
 
I found a qoad port Intel Pro/1000GT for 40 bucks and free ship- so i snagged one of them to try.

mostly need it for my untangle box. cant use the adapter I have (I think its a dual port, pcie x4 or x1)
the other 2 ports will most likely be just more for vm's.
 
The GT uses a regular PCI slot so be aware that the maximum bandwidth your entire PCI bus (all your PCI slots combined) can provide is 1Gb. That's why you want PCI-E network adapters so the bus isn't your bottleneck.

the quad GT is a PCI-X card, he's fine.

Perfect. Then he doesn't need to worry about it. I have no idea what slots a DL385 G3 has. I just wanted to point out that if it has no PCI-X slots then you have to deal with the PCI bus bandwidth limit.
 
yeah its got pci-x, which is fine, i only have a 30meg/sec cable connection, and it is rarely maxed out these days.

Decent little box, 6x 72gb 15k rpm drives in a raid 5 and 16gb of ram backed by 2 dual core opterons.

If a submitter mentions their machine or motherboard model number, it may be prudent to pull up the spec sheets for their device to improve the advice you offer about addons.

I know that I had an unhelpful reply typed out until I Googled "dl385 g3"
