Hey guys it's been awhile, and I'm looking for some help on where to start. I started a job about 4.5 years ago as a 2nd shift Systems Technician in an automotive manufacturing facility. My #1 goal was to keep production up and running. Now I am on 1st shift and am starting to get into larger projects. One of the projects I'm about to start working on is a network map and documentation. Right now everything is stored in an excel spreadsheet and are documented by hostname, IP, each port is listed with their VLANs and some of the ports contain descriptions or hostnames of the end device. There are ~42 Cisco switches in use right now. Basically I am looking for the proper way or best practice to create and entire networking map and better documentation of the network. So what software do you use/recommend for network mapping? What are some of the best practices when creating a network map? What should all be included (hostnames, cable type, vlan information of each port, etc...)? Any direction at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
