Hello everyone,

What are you IT guys using at work for tracking pcs across your network? I'm looking for a program that can automatically update a database with just basic computer information. Also, if the software has some type of log where you can enter in fixes you have done to the pc as well, that would be great.

We are looking at www.syslist.com. I know this software is pretty cheap, but I'm wondering what some alternitives are.

We are rolling out Microsoft's SMS to do this very thing, plus to enable remote installs, hotfixes, etc.

It isn't cheap, but I've heard it is great once installed.

Intuit's Track-It: http://blueocean.com/

Tally systems has a number of options: http://www.tallysystems.com/products/itassettracking.html

I'm familiar with an earlier version of the Tally Systems product, and it did a pretty good job. Not cheap, though.

Altiris has some asset tracking products as part of their software suite:

I have a large customer that uses the whole Altiris product line for help desk, imaging, and asset tracking. Expensive stuff, but they have a big budget.

Those are some of the big players in the market. At least it will give you an idea of what else there is out there.

Here are some others that came up while Googling:

Track-It is the only product that I have looked into. Very cheap and does just about everything.

I've been using EZ-Audit for over a year, and I really like it.

There's a free demo on their website, and the software is pretty cheap. I think I paid like $175 when version 4 came out, and I'm running 5.something now and I havent given them a single dime since. I just noticed they also have a version 6 now too.

I currently have it set to audit upon the first login for the day. All data is saved into a network share. Now any computer with the software installed can view, or I can generate an HTML report so that we dont even need the software.

It also tracks, and can generate reports on what software is installed, and hardware. Overall, very cool software and the price is right. Check out the demo.

We use Symantec ghost enterprise edition. We looked into MS SMS but we already had ghost as our imaging solution so adding the task to ghost was easiest.

RIght now, I'm using a spread sheet.

However, I've looked at Visual Audit Pro and think we'll be getting it soon. I've downloaded the demo before, but don't see it on their page right now ...hmmm.

we are using trackit. i took up the task of generating user info from AD and uploading it into the SQL database that powers trackit (crashes a lot with access as the backend). my kung fu is pretty good, but there is dark mojo in the trackit database. not a whole lot about the design makes any sense.

that being said i think the program is very good. if you try to get in there and start tailoring it to your own needs though you might start getting migraines.

I have Track It! 5 and 6.0. 5 sucks, and 6 is only slightly better. Whoever said it was cheap, doesn't know what they are buying.. I paid about $1600 for the standard version and the self service module.

The greatest thing about 6 is the integration into a domain. Other then that, it's a fancier looking version 5.

Also it's correct that customizing it is a pain, and not too flexible.
