Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I currently have a 2 pc network which is running on a cable modem connected to a router. I am getting dsl this week for 30days to see if it works out better for me due to the speeds they offer near me. My question is this. One the one machine I want it to use the dsl for internet but still have that machine connect to the network. IE only use the dsl for internet but still be connected to the 2nd pc in a network. I am thinking i will have to run 2 nic cards but how?

thanks in advance.

Realistically, its rather complicated to do this. I'd suggest you connect you entire network to the DSL and use several bandwidth meters, download tests, ping your favorite game servers etc... to see the speed of the DSL compared to the cable.

I have never done this, but it should be possible to change the Interface Metric so that when you access something outside of your network it should choose your DSL line vs internal network. You need to have 2 network card in the machine that you want to test the dsl on, and go into the Advanced Properties of the TCP/IP Protocol, under the IP Settings tab you can change the Metric. Set a 1 on the DSL NIC, and 100 on your internal network NIC.

I have only seen COST or Metric on heavy networking equipment. I have no idea if it will work, but worth a try.

you dont need to do anything fancy. plug the cat5 from the cable modem and the dsl modem, both into your network switch.

the catch? you would need a router for both connections. perhaps set one to 192.168.1.1, and one to 192.168.1.2. these are network gateways.

computer 1, gets 192.168.1.1 as its default gateway, computer 2 gets 192.168.1.2. since they are still both on the 192.168.1.0/24 network, they can both still talk to each other.

Good solution. The DSL modem will most likely have routing features built in, do be sure to disable DHCP and any other services. Set the internal address to the x.x.1.2.

Your existing router can still do the DHCP. You will only need to set the static address on the computer that needs to use the DSL, and make its default gateway the 1.2
