Network Audits

Hey all,

I have been given the task of auditing the networks my company supports.
Some are small, one server and a few PC's. However a few are rather large and over multiple sites via VPN, several windows server (and the odd linux one), Internet connections. all that.

So im the standard lazy tech, if i can automate a process i will, And if i can get tools to do it without making them im even happier! So does anyone know any good tools to help me with this? i dont want to go round several hundred PC around the country just to audit them

Thanks

If your not auditing for security but for assets, and the info on exactly what is connected try this:

http://www.numarasoftware.com/Track-It.asp

If you have AD set up you can deploy TrackIT which will automatically generate an SQL inventory as well has an audit feature to track what hardware each connected comp contains. If the AD is well maintained you can get a listing of all computers connected and there specs fairly easily.

I hate track-it. If you want to track assets, I'd use a different product. I was using a product called Alchemy Software Inventory for that purpose at the last company I worked for. Try this link (they have a free trial): http://www.mishelpers.com/network_inventory/software_inventory.html

Don't be scared by the pricing. If you email them or call them they will work with you. I think we only paid half or less than half the listed price. They also created a custom license for us since we only needed 350 licenses, which was between the available licenses for web purchases.

The software can run via logins script or it can pull all the info via A-D if all of the pc's are 2000 or above and are part of that A-D domain. You can track installed software versus licenses and also see all kinds of system information including BIOS versions and OS serial numbers.
