Sometimes when I boot my computer, I just opened IE and nothing came up! I was like maybe my cat5 got disconnected, but turned out it was plugged properly. Then I went over to examine the hardware via Device Manager and noticed the network adapter (broadband LAN) is missing except 1394 Net Adapter. How in the world did it just disappear?? So i restart the computer and still not there. So I shut it off and waited for like a min before turning it on and the network adapter is back! It happens all the time. It's really annoying

What could be the problem? any help would be greatly appreciated

Well you need to provide some more information. First off, what kind/model of NIC are you using? Do you have the latest drivers? Also, is it connected to a router, or directly to a dsl/cable modem. There are really only a few plausible options though:

  • Bad NIC
  • Bad Drivers
  • Something in the OS or other software interfering
  • An external device causing problems

Your best bet is to update your drivers first. If you are, and want to rule out the software/OS issues, try booting from a Linux live CD like Knoppix. If the device also disappears there, you know you have bad hardware at some point.

Is there anything you're doing prior to it disappearing that might be a clue?
