I just purchased a Negear WGR614 router. I have not been able to tranfer files between PCs at 54Mb/s speeds yet. Windows says I am connected at 54Mb/s, but I cannot seem to get faster than 8-10Mb/s when both computers are connected via WiFi. When one computer is connected via a CAT-5 cable and the other wireless, I can get around 18-20Mb/s. Same speeds if I reverse the config. If I hook up both computers via CAT-5, I can get 78Mb/s. Signal strength is not a problem. Also, enabling/disabling WEP/WPA seems to make no difference in speed. The router firmware is up to date, and both wireless cards have up to date drivers. Both computers are fresh installs of Windows with SP2. I did try testing with SP1 and I had similar problems.

Any ideas about what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong, the speed of 802.11g isn't really 54mbit that is just marketing bullshit. The best you'll get is around the 20mbit area. And since you have 2 computers, they are sharing that 20mbit.

For example you are uploading something from computer a to computer b and they are both wireless. Computer A is sending the data to the switch and then the switch is sending that data to Computer B. You only have about 20mbit/s to play with, so Computer A is using up 10mbit/s or so and the switch is then using the other 10mbit/s or so to send that data to Computer B.

the only way youll be able to obtain such speeds is by using wireless cards that netgear reccommends for that router. d-link routers work best with d-link wireless cards and the same goes for netgear products. try to get your hardware to be of the same company and make sure that the cards are the same model for higher speeds.
