Netgear switch stability

I am mildly ignorant when it comes to networking. I am looking to run a switch to accommodate a new home automation software that uses gateways to control everything. I am interested in Netgear because my buddy gets great deals on them. Especially being a home a/v and integration contractor.

-What Netgear switch offers stability over speed? Looking to keep down time and trouble shoot to a minimum.

-Would like a 16 port switch.

Products to be used with the Netgear switch. http://www.globalcache.com/products/itach/specs/

Also, I will be installing a gigabit wireless router then bridging to the switch, but thats another topic.

Looks towards their "ProSafe" line of switches, that's their small/medium biz grade units.
I'm an HP ProCurve fan myself, but I've seen those ProSafes do fine. Wasn't happy with their warranty services many years ago when I had an issue at a client, painful process that took at long time. HP is wicked fast with their support. But Netgear may have improved in that area in recent years, maybe someone else can share this kind of experience.

I would love to run a ProCurve, but I get better deals on Netgear. If Netgear is less stable and bad customer service then may lean towards HP. I will have to figure out if the extra cost of the ProCurve is worth it to me.

Thanks for the input, YeOldeStonecat

Im at the same point too. I have a few netgear I got recently, since netgear switched to lifetime warranty, I would like to get hps but when just starting out initial costs get to me. I've had a 24 port gb sword for a couple years now, haven't had any issues but haven't pushed since I don't have the hardware to really do so.

Ive bought 2x netgear GS108T for different home setups, and they have worked great for me. The "T" model has some managed features, that i dont really use.

the GS716T-200, may be the 16 port model of what i have. I'm not sure what the -200 models get you, they are newer than mine.

Some of those iTach devices can be powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you might consider into looking at a switch that does that, if its of interest.

I've had good luck with my Netgear ProSafe switches.

Sorry for the late responses everyone.

When I off-load my current URC system. I will be purchasing my new switch and Itach gateways. Glad to hear people are having good luck with Netgear Prosafe units.

I am leaning away from POE because of my lack of knowledge and thinking it might add one more thing to worry about. Trying to keep things simple and stable.

dashpuppy: I was going to try iRule software. Given its name you have already guessed the software is iPhone / iPad based. GUI design is open software, which is a big plus for customization. Especially when companies like GUIFX charges $2k for small software packets. Another big plus, provided its stable, is the cost for everything hardware & software is still cheaper than my single remote control excluding the RF to IR base unit.

I do alot of control4 stuff, thats why i asked/ I am a huge fan of POE, because most things now a days plus stuff that is coming out, is going POE, no more power adapters or screwing around with ac lines etc etc. It's nice to just power the device over POE.

I am scouring ebay every day looking for a 16-24 port POE gigabit switch, i know 24 ports for the house is over kill, but at times i may need them, because i'm always fixing something, plus if i buy it now, then i can use it later when i get my shop / house setup. My house will be all setup with cat6 and all running through my g-bit switch etc etc etc.

POE rules :)

Funny you mention Control 4. I love what Control 4 is doing for the entry level consumers, but I like messing around with my software. iRule seemed to be a nice idea worth exploring and you can't beat the price point. My long time friend was asked to help review Crestron's Prodigy line. I am not a fan of earlier Prodigy, but the new pmc3 is supposedly compatible with all Crestron lines. The only problem is that Crestron is not for the end user and too pricey, in my opinion. However it's very stable. I help my friend from time to time with integration. He signed me up for training on Crestron Prodigy line. The class was a joke, but it was still in its infancy. After he gave input on the class, they changed a lot, and he said it was a better class. It can be exciting and overwhelming what can be done with Crestron, but I wont pay for it.

Control4 stuff is pretty neat, i do all the vlans and networking, the other guys do programming. We use all Cisco business units, haven't found any other device that i like at all :(.

I have seen the Netgear GS108T crash about twice in a year of operation. For this application it sounds like an unmanaged switch is fine. If you are going Netgear, I would recommend one of the unmanaged switches.

Cisco business = stay away from. Lycrap. Cisco needs to drop that brand already.. its hurting them.
