Netflix on android... finally

I think the current list of supported devices is bullshit. Only certain processors are being supported and my Epic 4G isn't one of them because it doesn't have the so called hardware DRM.

sweet hope the evo 3d makes the cut for this. Planning to get that for me and a nexus s 4g come june when the evo 3d launches

The Android market now has rentals and Samsung's mediahub does too so Netflix can go screw themselves for all I'm concerned.

It should work just fine if you root your device and install a custom image... at least other people are reporting it as such.

Time to actually install Gingerbread on my Droid X.

Not working on my Samsung Vibrant. :(

I really hate all this bullshit with Apps only working on certain devices. Its time for some standardization, even if it means hardware.

Works also on the droid x, and OG droid

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/05/12/download-netflix-for-the-droidx/

A good day indeed :D

Yup, just put it on my OG Droid and it works great. I'm running a 2.3.2 ROM (Project Elite 5.0.2) right now though. I'll test it out on my wifes stock 2.2 Droid here soon.

Hilarious.. I'll bet they release an "update/patch" here shortly that kills functionality on anything but the phones they listed. I don't comprehend why they're doing this.. it certainly isn't for DRM reasons.

It's all about the money. Aren't all the "supported" phones Snapdragon based?

Yeah, all of them are running first gen snapdragon procs except for the Nexus S, which I think is a hummingbird proc like the rest of the Galaxy S phones. So that's kind of weird they would allow that on the list.

It seems none of the phones running second gen snapdragon procs (like your Thunderbolt) work with it yet, which is even more retarded given that my Droid works with a TI proc .

I didnt see if Netflix had intentions of making the app friendly for Thunderbolts and all other Android Phones. Do they plan to?

Well the Nexus S is running hummingbird, just like the Galaxy S so I don't think its hardware specific. They probably released it for older devices first because they were working on it since last year.

I hate this shit too. Bunch of my friends and coworkers are using Android phones and its a total mess of what phones support what and what firmware every device is on. Unless something changes I am definitely getting an iPhone for my next phone

I assume they have plans too, but they're being as vague as possible about what devices will work in the future and why they implemented it that way. I was just going off the old rumor that Netflix originally intended to only run on Snapdragon equipped devices for DRM reasons, but that doesn't seem like the case now since it's running on (along with 1st gen Snapdragon phones) the Nexus S, which is a Hummingbird proc, but then also runs on some Motorola phones that supposedly aren't supported (Android Market said my phone wasn't supported) but after finding/installing the .apk for it elsewhere it works but work fine. But that may be because we're running custom ROMs, I haven't tried it on my wifes stock Droid.

It certainly doesn't seem to be hardware specific if it runs on a Nexus S, but not on a Vibrant. So I'm thinking if the Vibrant (or any other Galaxy S phone) had 2.3+ installed on it, it may work..? Whatever is going on, it's retarded and is only going to piss off consumers and manufacturers further.

Has anyone tried watching a whole film/show on an "unsupported" device yet? It seemed to work on my Droid too until I get 2-4 mins into anything, then it just kicks me back to the main menu of the netflix app. It might be due to my Droids crappy 256 MB RAM, but I even tried locking it into memory (option in my ROM) and I get the same behavior :(.

If it's for the Evo 4G does that mean it's also for the Evo Shift? I'm assuming it's not but it would be nice as I have a shift.

I was torn between the iPhone and the thunderbolt and ended up with the t-bolt. I am actually not liking how different it is from my Droid 2. For both phones being android, its almost night and day in differences. Oh well, guess I have 13 more days before I can return it if not happy. I want some standardization too.

Well for now, the app seems to work perfectly on my Droid 2 running Gingerbread. It was just a matter of getting the Netflix.apk and it works perfectly once installed.

Yay, I can officially watch netflix on my 3.7" Incredible, but not on the 10.1" Transformer with hdmi out...fail.

it's only a matter of time for that. i'm sure motorola and google are eager to get it on the xoom (the google tablet "flagship") which is tegra2. once one gets it they all will, thanks to developers haha

Using the hack doesn't work on my Samsung Epic, maybe because im still using the old 2.2 beta ROM or it just isn't going to work. FML

Too bad it doesn't work on my Nexus S with CM7.

Didn't Koush post to his Twitter that he was looking in that?

EDIT: Yes, he did and it has been fixed.

You can try this trick that's mentioned earlier in the thread. Unfortunately, this trick doesn't work on the TBolt. :(

Netflix did a good job, it works great on my EVO.

I ran it on wifi last night and it looked HD perfect.

Then I ran the same show (Weeds) with wifi off, only 3G (4G off because weak in my area). The quality was still pretty damn good. I'm actually quite amazed.

Anyone get this working with HDMI out yet? I'm running a stock Evo rooted with unrevoked and no HDMI output for me, though some on another forum are claiming it works fine for them.

I have the cable but I can't get it until the morning. I'll update this thread then.

I finally upgraded to 2.2 froyo so that I could get this to work on my incredible. I watched the pilot episode of numb3rs last night with WiFi, and it was really good. It paused a couple of times because my phone wanted to install the vcast update, but I am holding off on that until I do more research. I would really like to see this ability ported to the nook color, it will give me a reason to root it. I would have to say that I am impressed with the netflix app but not with froyo. I still don't like the fact that it keeps starting shit I don't want running. I liked how the task killer worked with 2.1. I had just about everything turned off and my battery would still be well over 80 % in the late afternoon, even being unplugged since 6 in the morning.

That is very surprising.
I am running Captivate CM7 and in order to make it work we need to edit the buildprop to make it think it is a Nexus S! :D
Works great btw.

A modified build.prop was posted shortly after my old post. It's working now.
