Netflix Not Making A Streaming Device

That's a dumb question. Why would Netflix even consider making its own streaming device?

In a Q&A session at the Recode technology conference in Palos Verdes, Calif., Hastings said Thursday his subscription-streaming-video company has no interest in making a device, and it doesn't have the time, energy or money to buy the rights to live sports content.

Netflix going into the streaming device business would be suicidal ... all risk with no upside ... for Amazon and Apple it made sense since they had vertical cross market stores that would benefit from the devices ... Netflix is only a streaming company and they are much more likely to get integrated in all the competing devices if they are not competing with them on the device front

Why? Because there's already Smart TV with Netflix apps in every single one of them, and if you don't have a Smart TV, there's blu-ray and DVD players with Netflix built into it. That's why.

It only takes an app to stream Netflix. Anything and everything is already capable of streaming it. It would be like HBO or Showtime offering a HDMI dongle that only streamed their respective content. Which they did back in the late 70's and early 80's. Who's old enough to remember that three-button set-top box that brought you HBO, Showtime and Cinemax?

Yeah... Netflix doesn't need it's own device. It's already on everything. People buy devices just for Netflix.

Because if you're not a single hermit, there's a hidden cost to a chromecast, you have to share your phone or buy a phone/tablet for others. After buying a few junkie tablets for curiosity sake, I'd say any device south of $60 would be more painful than helpful and $60-$90 would be hit and miss.

So if you're single or have everyone in the house all phone'd up already, its $35. Anything else its more. And then there's being everyone's IT guy for one more thing.

When every recent DVD player does Netflix, why would they ever need to bother?

Instead, what they need to do is pony up for actual RECENT movie releases, as they are 6+ months behind where Blockbuster was on every release .... still. Pathetic.
