I was wondering what options other than Atom solutions there are out there that are compact (13 inches or less), have high battery life (4 hours plus), are available under $400, and that can play 720 video. Also, Pros and Cons to buying a non-atom solution?

I've looked into older laptops like the IBM X60 as well as Core2Solo laptops and so far they seem quite good for the price; as good if not better than a netbook.

I just picked up 2 HP TC4400s off of eBay a day ago for 300 each. One for me and one for the woman. They are tablets, but if you use them just as a laptop, they still are nice. Core2Duos @ 2.0, 1 GB RAM (will upgrade them to 4), 80 GB SATA HDD (will be putting an SSD in mine and a 320 in hers.) 12.1 inch screen. Quite similar to the x60. It has the nipple and touchpad. The core2duo is what sold me. I currently have a netbook and I just need something more powerful yet small. These should be perfect. Also look at the Dell D420s. Check eBay, you can browse the laptop section by screen size and CPU and so on. That's what I did to find the deal on the tablets. Good luck :).

looking for something similar, anyone else care to share some experiences with any laptops of these specs/price

I know it's over double your price point, but throwing this out there: what about one of the new U30Jc's, with a core i3 and 10 hours or so of battery life (Courtesy of Nvidia's optimus - I see great things in this...)

Yeah, it's nicely spec'd, but in my eyes, with such a high price point, its out of the netbook's league. I think one of the defining features of these types of laptops along with portability is accessibility because of their price. But that's definitely a nice machine for the right person!
