NetApp CPU Utilization?

I think all our NetApp guys disappeared. Nobody is answering my NetApp questions anymore. :D

I am demoing this VMTurbo product and one of the recommendations is to provision new controllers because of high CPU utilization. This is a FAS3240 with two active/active heads. I am just wondering if there is some type of recommendation around CPU utilization for a NetApp? If our CPU utilization is frequently at 80% on both heads, does that really mean we have too much congestion and should get more controllers? What is the max CPU utilization that you should have?

Chris here from VMTurbo (Sales Engineering team).

Good question. By default the max utilization value for NetApp filers (beyond which we recommend provisioning a new controller) is 50%. We find that many customers use files in HA pairs, so we want to ensure that the system can support failure of one of the filers in the HA pair.

You can change the max value in Policy --> Analysis --> Storage Controller --> (select the line "Storage Controllers" at the top of the new-middle pane). In the right-hand pane, drop down "Utilization Constraints" and double click "50" in the value field. This will allow you to manually override the default setting. Keep in mind this is a cliff rather than a threshold, so you will see provision actions as you approach the number you input--not when you've already passed it.

Hope this is helpful. I'd be more than happy to answer any other questions VMTurbo-related.
