Net adapter = not working on mobo.. HELP!

I moved my computer from one house to another and when I plugged it in it booted fine, but the network adapter is not working. When I unplugged it before I moved it, it worked fine.The light on the back of it doesn't work at all. I'm certain that the router is working fine and the cable is fine, because I tested them both with another computer. Also, I plugged in a PCI network card and it also wouldn't work. It's almost like something is disabled. Both of the cards are installed and register in the network connections folder. It just says that the network cable is unplugged.

Specs:

Abit IC7-MAX3 - mobo
Linksys network adapter
Windows XP... that should be all of the specs you need.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Had the exact same problem on a clients machine. I just slapped a PCI Nic in there and called it a day. Board was an ECS, can't remember the Onboard Nic controller.
 
yea, but I slapped another network card in there and it's the same problem, no lights come on, but windows xp recognizes it as being plugged in.
 
Does the light on the router indicate that the machine is connected?
 
Hey, yes it does, for one of the computers that are on the network, but not for the one that i have my machine on, light on the hubb nor the network card itself come on, acts like its unplugged.

Well if you have used 2 network cards both onboard and pci, I would say its most likely Xp.

I didn't hear any problems with the router, unless of course you only tried using the same port on the router.

I had this happen to me a while back, or at least similar. My system was connected to a netgear router with automatic dhcp.
When I went back home, I connected right to the cable modem and it wouldn't connect. I tried putting multiple pci cards in, and nothing. Go through your tcp.ip settings. I can't remember if my lights were lighting up tho. If everything works out there, I think a reinstall is involved.


1.Check the Port
2.Tcp/ip settings
3.Windows Xp - reinstall
 
sounds like a cable or a port to me since my lights will come on as soon as the machine is powered up.
 
im gonna have to go with something wrong with the cable or the router's port
 
here's the catch... the onboard NIC is not turning on, but windows knows it's there. It installs the drivers and everything. I figured the port died or something... so I went to wally world and bought a new network card. I installed it and BAM, the lights don't come on either. I just did a FRESH install of XP, completely formatted the drive and everything, and it still does not work. I could understand if the onboard port was dead, but then why wouldn't the PCI card work? Anyone who can help will have my eternal gratitude. Thanks.

I"m probably going to RMA the mobo back to Newegg, but that means I'll be out of a comp for a week or so. This suxors.
 
If it worked on one router but not on another one, I would suspect the router. Did you try a different port or a port on the router that you know is working? Installing a fresh XP is completely unnecessary. You've (probably) ruled out the NIC since you tried two, and you know at least one was working before. Try the cable and a different port. If you plug a cable into the NIC and the router, you should at least get one light on the NIC. That indicates a physical connection has been made. Then if you get the second, constantly blinking light, that indicates a good signal.
 
I've tried that and it's not working... I cannot figure out what's wrong. I know for a fact that the router isn't broken b/c I have another computer on the same router. I switched to the port and used the same cable as the working computer and I get nothing. I hate computers :(
 
I would have tried a bootable Linux distro before reinstalling Windows... but... at least one light should come on when you turn on your computer. In fact, the lights on my NIC card are always on, even when the computer is off (have a decent MSI board... but I always forget the model numbers on this stuff). Are you sure that this extra NIC card you have been testing with is okay?
