Thought it'd be a fun project, and hopefully pretty cheap. I already got an old broken NES on ebay for $26 and I also have an unused 16gb CF card, now Im looking into the hardware, and here is a little list I have sofar.

Any particular reason why you're going with the Geode rather than one of the Atom boards?
 
I am thinking you will have to drill new holes and do some dremel work, but if you are up to it it sounds like a pretty sweet project. Wish you the best of luck. Pictures if you succeed.
 
Atom boards may be faster, but they are also considerably larger. That's a nano-ITX board and going by the reviews, only 7w under load. Probably plenty for emulating old consoles and whatnot.
 
From what I recall some guy stuffed an NES with a mini-ITX mobo a while ago. I did just look at AMDs benchmarks for the Geode and it looks decent, but for the price, it might be worth it to just go with an Atom. Your call.
 
I'd opt for the atom. The Geode is woefully underpowered and you might be wishing for a little more in a few months. It's also quite pricey considering. If you opt to throw more powerful hardware in there, performance-pcs.com has a 60mm fan that's really thin, but manages ~25-30 CFM.

BTW... I have a system here that I've been trying to work up the initiative to cram inside a nintendo. I won 4 broken Nes's off ebay a few months back for $40 shipped. My setup consists of a Zotac 8200 board, AMD 5000+BE, 2GB PC-8000 (low profile dimms would have been a better choice) a WD Scorpio Black and Avermedia AverTV combo. The whole rig is going to be mounted upside down inside the nintendo, with an optical (sata DVD-RW) mounted underneath the motherboard. I grabbed the casetronic 120W PSU from logicsupply and a Scythe Shuriken and 60mm thin fan from p-pcs.com to keep her cool.

This setup has the gusto to run TF2 at 30FPS in a spartan server with low details.

I attempted the feat once already, but got sidetracked. If you want any advice then I would be glad to help. The mod has also been done about 1000 times. Google Nintendo PC to see a few good and bad examples.
 
well i decided to put my money somewhere else (my bike) so i made it into a lunch box :)
