Nero write speeds have dropped

alright. i noticed this first when i was legally copying a dvd of mine. (we can say that right). the program i used to read the dvd took about 20 extra minutes to rip. then i tried nero and i got write speeds of no more then 1,200 KB/s (normally get 12,000 KB/s). can someone help me here.

also my mouse has been lagging when i move it around.

Check to see whether DMA is enabled, on both the HDDs and the DVD burner.
 
i checked it and it says

primary channel
transfer mode: dma if available

i have never changed this though why is this a problem
 
Yeah,DMA if available,what does it say below that? Current Transfer Mode=?
Also check for the secondary IDE channel. I'm assuming that your DVD burner and HDD are on separate IDE channels?

Out of curiosity, what is in PIO mode?
Both my HD's are in UDMA 6 (ultra133) & my cd/rws are in UDMA 2 (ultra33).

my mobo is a Intel (Wasp) Pentium 4 Motherboard No CPU R0
(it was manufactured by Gateway)

the gateway support website lists
Intel(r) Chipset Software Installation Utility, version 5.00.1012

for my mobo
 
i tried this and that is also what my gateway support rep told me to do too. it didn't work. i've checked to see if any drivers are available but it doesn't look like there are any.

can anyone else help
 
aenima6, install the new Intel chipset drivers and reboot. Now go into device manager, and DELETE the DVD writer.Delete the Primary and Secondary IDE channels as well and reboot. Let Windows redetect them and then see.
 
how serious of a process is this? will it completly mess up my computer if i do this and it doesn't work? it seems like a crucial thing to do. have you experienced this problem before and this way fixed it?

ps. and by delete do you mean the option when i right click of "uninstall"
 
This isn't anything really serious, it's just that Windows sometimes needs a kick in the pants. And yeah, I mean the right click->uninstall procedure.
Give it a shot, it can't hurt anything.
I haven't had this specific problem before ,though(knocks on wood!)
 
so that old chipset driver that gateway offered me and that i told about in an earlier post is the one i need to download and install?

i'm worried if it isn't the right solution and if i unistall those devices they won't work properly on my reboot
