so I've been running a neopower 480 in my main box (system in sig) for quite some time now, and it's been great. But one thing that concerns me is the heat...this thing gets REALLY damn hot. Like when the system has been under full load for a while the casing on the psu is too hot to touch...like it will almost burn you. The fan works fine, and it does indeed speed up as the temp increases. Airflow out of the back is pretty high under load. But it's still incredibly hot. I don't see any instability or anything, and the rails seem solid...but the heat has kinda caught me off guard. My truepower 430 always ran very cool. Anyone have any experiences with this psu? Is this normal for it?
 
I have four of the Neopowers, and they all run a bit hot. The hotness makes me question their long-term reliability. I think the reason they are hot is because there are no vents cut in the housing to allow some air to recirculate back into the computer case. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that there would be dead spots around some components because of this.
 
I've got the 1st gen Neopower that is non-sleeved, It runs pretty hot as well. But i noticed when I went to a friends house for a lan party, he recently picked up the 2nd gen neopower, and it runs even hotter, I also question their long-term reliability.
 
My home server has a Neo in it; it's been running for nearly a year, now. The exhaust is hot as hell, and it isn't anywhere near full load. If I touch the exhaust grill for too long, I think I would get burned. I'm upgrading the box soon, and I'll be replacing the Neo with a Seasonic. I recently swapped a Seasonic into my workstation in place of a Neo, and the new PS is much cooler and a bit quieter. My other gripe with the Neo is its fan controller. When I played games or did some rendering, the fan would spool up for a moment and then slow down, over and over again. Very annoying to listen to. The Neo whispers if it isn't stressed, but demand much from it, and it talks loudly.

My Seasonic is quiet and cool. ;)

According to silentpcreview.com my PSU at a 400w load puts out 20C lower exhaust temp than a Neo Power with the same load. Even with a 100w light bulb in the case the test results showed mine was 10C cooler exhaust temp and all the while running quieter.
 
My Neopower was really hot to the touch when I first got it...then I realized that the fan wasn't working. I took it apart and now I have a Panaflo blowing on it. It's nice and cool now.

Yeah I'd believe it too...this exhaust air is nothing like I've seen before. But oh well...it's running great and strong with solid rails, so I'll just trust that antec knew what the heck they were doing. I don't hear about anyone with neo's dying on them left and right...don't think I've heard of anyone complain at all about them, really.
 
You guys do know that these new Antec's require "positive case pressure" to operate properly, right?

That is more air blowing in, than blowing out. ;)

No doubt, Antec makes great products including the Neo.

lol, what were you doing with an incandescent bulb in your case?
 
Isn't it a good thing when the air coming out is hot? That means a lot of heat is being removed...

Nope. Think about this: two nearly identical power supplies, equally loaded. One has a low speed fan, the other a high speed fan. The PS with the low speed fan will have a higher exhaust temperature than the other, while removing the same amount of heat energy (in steady state).

Cool exhaust air would only be bad if the heat sinks weren't doing their job... and only for a little while, then. Eventually the exhaust would get quite hot ;)
 
I had noticed the same thing with my Neo 480.

Damn thing burned up tonight....almost took my whole system out.

Had to throw in an old Raidmax 420 as a temp.

I think I am going with a Fortron....
