Nehalem-EP vs Nehalem

AFAIK, the EP designation just means that it is a server grade Xeon and not a vanilla desktop Core i7.
 
Non-server Nehalem CPUs can only be used individually since they don't have the extra QPI links necessary to communicate in a dual-socket setup. Since that server uses dual-CPU motherboards, you cannot use Core i7 CPUs and must use Nehalem-EP Xeons.

Nehalem = Core i7

Nehalem-EP = Xeon
