Nehalem 8-core this year?

So I'm still rocking my 4400+, 4GB DDR400 and 8800GT, wich is serving me fine on the gaming front, but rather lacking with my rendering work (Maya, commercial visualization and logo animations/still renders). So I'm eagerly awaiting my post marriage financial situation. I'm tying the knot this august and I have permission to build up a new system immediately afterwards. I like the idea of a Skulltrail setup, but with higher end ram and all the bit necessary, its just too pricey for me to do jump on that bandwagon without thinking twice. What I'd rather do is go with a Nehalem setup, especially if Intel has an 8-core cip coming his year. Anyone got any idea?

Also, the wife to be says that if i dont go too OTT with a new rig, she might let me look into getting a Fiat 500 about a year from now :)
 
There will be a 4 core (8 threaded) Nehalem proc coming Q4 2008/Q1 2009 aimed at the desktop market. Not much other details on Nehalem. link

Otherwise the Q9450/Q9550 will becoming next month. Q9650 come Q3 2008, or you can get the QX9650 or QX9770.

There is also talk of a 6 core proc too, but some are speculating that it will be aimed at the server market. Makes sense, intel came out with skulltrail...

EDIT: Personally I'd grab a QX9650 if I could find one cheap from someone (sub $600... wont happen for a long time). Other then that and I wanted something more affordable.. Q9450/Q9550.
 
8 core Nehalem is a 2009 product, and probably only for servers sockets.
 
I guess I could survive with a quad setup for a while. It'll be interesting to see where the industry is this fall with price:performance. Hopefully ram prices hold as I'd love to load a system with atleast 8GB.

Any rumors on Nehalem prices?
 
Yuck, socket 604... no thank you, I'm sticking with 775 until the nehalem sockets come out. Socket 604 is a server socket.
 
there is a Nehalem SuperPi 1m lying around.
2.66Ghz doing 7.x seconds if i remember correctly.
 
And the 4 core/8 thread chip in Q4 2008 will probably be $1000-1500.

I dont expect a full nehalem line (from $225-$1000+) desktop, server and mobile until Q3 09.

I'm getting a Q9450 next month and will stick with that until the end of 09 probably.
 
Personally, I do not care about the Nehalem 8-core. Overlclocking 8 cores may not be easy!
I will pick up a the 4-core version only if DDR3 price goes down by a large chunk.
My Q6700 is not too shabby and Vista runs well with 4GB.
 
Hmmm, purely speculation if anyone wnats to field this, but much do you suppose $2,000 USD would grab come the end of this year given average price changes/higher cost for new tech for a cpu/ran/mobo bundle. I'm sure no-one can nail it, but whats the fun in not speculating??

What would make you think that? I would think just the opposite. Intel made the C2D very much like that. They are now pushing quadcore extremely hard, Id be surprised to see them launch with anything less than 4 different quadcore variations of Nehalem.
 
I was planning on doing a completely new build this spring/summer, but since finding out Nehalem is so close, there's no point in upgrading to a socket platform that will start being phased out in less than 1 year.

I can squeeze 1 more year out of this rig.
