Im running a 256gb maxtor diamondmax 10, its aprox. 8 or 9 years old if i remember correctly and althought its still running great, im pretty much close to maximum capacity. The two routes im looking at are: Buy a 256gb ssd and continue to use the maxtor to store pictures, mp3s OR buy a bigger mechanical harddrive and store everything on that. Obviously the speed increase going to ssd has me looking at the ssd hard. I primarily use my computer for web surfing and gaming. Thanks [H]

If going SSD is the best route, someone please recommend a fast and reliable ssd at or under 200 bucks. thanks

if you like seagate I would get one of there video storage survealnce drive since they are made to be on 24 hours a day. unless you want it to be even more tuff then you buy an entireprize drive for lots more money.

If you want westerndigital they go buy colors and all do there own thing. Black is performance and RED is made for NAS. What ever you are going to use it for.

You can buy a cheeta or raptor drive if you want harddisk speed that is not soils state you get more space but it will not match solid state you can get it in 1tb and it is faster than most normal drives.

I cant say seagate or western digital is more reliable than the other but seagate has been getting rid of its 5 year warranty on most drives and western digital still has them on some drives like the raptors.

Wouldn't feel right if I didn't pop in and highly encourage you to buy an SSD =] Just makes for a better experience. And if 256 gigs has lasted you ~7 years you certainly aren't a space hog. Recommendation - any Intel drive I suppose, or the Samsung 840's? With $200 you have a lot of options. Just take a look around.

Try to get both an SSD and a hard drive. Do you have backups of your data currently ?

Depends on how good the DVDs are some have crap dye that will degrade over time. if the are DVD-rs they cant be written to again so I use them and blurays for back up of data i never want to lose.

I would make copies of the DVDS on another brand that is good and have 2. and if you man handle them they can get scratched.

good advice, thank you. i think ive determined to get an ssd. im unsure if i should save alittle cash and get a 128gb or just get a 256gb.

I highly recommend using Dvdisaster if you're going to continue backing up to DVD's. It's kind of like raid5 for DVD's. http://dvdisaster.net/en/index.html

I physically damaged DVD's by drilling holes through them, sanding them, etc and was always able to recover the data.
