Hey guys!
I live in Dayton, NV....small town but full of computers needing my love. I'm going to build a shop out back behind my house and heres where you all come in, I need some thought and suggestions on tools, software, advertising, etc...
I have been on this site from almost day one and have come to have great respect for [H] members....ahhh that sounds gross heheh anyway you all know I need your help! :p

I will be building computers and fixing them.
Dayton's pop is made up of redneck, avg age 54, california transplants, and such.

BTW, I plan on having a hard roof so I will post pix down the road. :)
 
Def. have several virus-scanning programs, and spyware removal programs. Also get some HDD diagnostic utility (like powerMax from maxtor... google powermax.) and Memtest and the such. I remember seeing a CD that had "everything" you would need.. forget where though...

Get some Crimpers for networking, and networking cable testers, so you can tell if a persons ethernet cable is fubar'd (and then fix it for them...)

You need a screw driver, just get one of those little toolkits with a screwdriver that has removeable heads and such.

A multimeter would be great aswell, just to see if someones PSU is a piece of shit, and needs to go.

Possibly get a couple of copies of WinXP/2k, and a copy of 98 you can use to put on peoples systems an stuff.


And remember, always check the most obvious stuff, like the power connectors are plugged into mobo, and comp is plugged into wall etc... Can save you a lot of hassle.

Edit: Make sure your prices are pretty competitive with other places, especially the "larger" places.
 
Just make sure the market needs what you plan to offer. Most 54+ people are either afraid of technology or just not interested and if the POP is as redneck as you say, they may not be able to even turn on a pc.

Advertise in the local paper to get your name out but most of your customers should be referall clients if you are doing your job right.

To do it right, you'll need :
1 of every peice of hardware (for troubleshooting)
A copy of each OS
a toolkit
A workspace
Business license
-Set up an LLC as opposed to a regular business. You'll be protected from lawsuits and get more tax benefits
Business Accouting software/accountant
Repair forms
Legal forms
Business name
Maybe a logo
a credit card (preferably a business credit card)

There is probably more, I am just too tired to think of it right now.

Definetly a coffee machine, or maybe even spend more on an Expresso machine or something.. For those late nights when you have a lot of work to do ;)

A nice, but yet fairly simple logo is the ideal way to go, as long as you don't have a name like: "Joe's computer fix-it place with a lower price than most other stores so you dont have to worry about getting ripped off because we care." (Exaggeration of a crappy name)

Something catchy like... "Path-E-Tech". Or "Gizmo fixin Place".

Then get someone/make a logo yourself that isn't too fancy, is easy to read, and has your name. Usually done with lighter colours.

As stated by the other guy up there, a piece of every kind of hardware CPU(AMD&Intel), Mobo(AMD&Intel, several sockets, unless the populous hasn't been introduced to more advanced...), Some RAM (SD, DDR, Reg.),Video card, Harddrive... You get the point.
