Hi, I'm trying to upgrade from my current rig (sig). It's well over due, and I'm on a tight budget. I want something powerful, reasonably good FPS in major games, and also cheap.

Please Note, I'm in New Zealand and everything is very expensive over here! =P

This is what I've chosen so far:

CPU = ATHLON64 X2 EE 3600+ 2.0GHZ Dual Core

MOBO = Asus M2N-E AMD Socket AM2

VID CARD = Asus Extreme N7900GS/ 256MB

RAM = Kingston 2x512

POWER = APEX 500WATT

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anything will be very much appreciated!

Cheers!

- blow an extra 50-60 bucks and go with a 4200/4400/4600 Alternatively, for an extra couple hundred bucks overall, a conroe e6600 system would be MUCH faster, if you're looking for longevity.

- video card = ew. for under 250$, you can get an x1800xt, 7900gt, probably even an x1900 and get more than double the performance at decent resolutions...

- Definitely want to go with 2 gigs of ram.

- Never heard of Apex, you do *not* want to skimp on power supply. Go with a brand name, enermax liberty, OCZ modstream, Sunbeam Nuuvo, Seasonic M12, are a few that come to mind.

Happy building

I happen to like the 7900GS.

I have the EVGA model, and it overclocked to 600/1600, and is quite a bit faster than a 7900GT, but if you have the peso's get an X1900XT 256MB

and get a 3800 non-EE, better overclocker, double the cache.

and yes, no less than 2GB of ram, running an X2 with less is criminal (I ran mine with 512 and it was an interesting experience.)

Edit: Get a good PSU, Apex is shit. Period. An antec NeoHE can be had for around $100 for the 500w model, its worth it.
