To start off, I really am not very knowledgeable in the Intel/P4 market. A friend came to me wanting to get a serious upgrade from his current pc (P3 933mhz, 256mb PC133 ram, an aging GF2) that would last him for quite awhile. I figured he should go for a higher end intel based system with the following parts, as it would definitely last him some time:

$84.00 - Antec LanBoy
$150.00 - ABIT IC7-G MAX2
$224.00 - P4 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology
$141.00 - 512MB DDR PC-3500 of Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series

What do you guys think? It's been awhile since I've actually gone out and priced out a serious upgrade like this, so I'm not totally up to date on what to get and what to be wary of. The total price comes out to about 600. His budget is roughly 500-600. He is a little hesitant on OC'ing, but I'd like to keep options open for him for if he does decide to go that route later on.

This is a sound combo, but are you sure he needs the IC7-G? All the G line (but is $30 more) has that the plain IC7 has is an onboard NIC, which you can find a 10/100 card for free after rebates. Other than that, make sure you can comfortable fit your hard drives inside the bottom bays of the lanboy. I just bought a Sonata with an IS7 and had the hardest time turning the ribbons to get into the motherboard.

OR:
1. $84.00 Antec LanBoy
2. $172.99 P4C800 DELUXE
3. $224.00 - P4 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology (I would go with something lower and overclock but you cant go bad with this)
4. $160 2x256MB GEIL Dual Channel PC4200 DDR 533Mhz 512M Ultra Platinum Kit

Spend the extra and get the better mobo/ram TRUST ME! Then again if your not overclocking, your list would suit you fine!

OR:
1. $84.00 Antec LanBoy
2. $172.99 P4C800 DELUXE
3. $164.00 - P4 2.4C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology
4. $160 2x256MB GEIL Dual Channel PC4200 DDR 533Mhz 512M Ultra Platinum Kit
5. $42.99 Zalman CNPS 7000Cu

I would be a bit hesitant on the lanboy. It's only a 350watt. I prefer 430watt minimum and personally use a TruePower 550watt in my system.

It all depends on if you are going to OC. If you are get the 500+W forton. Priced around the same if not a wee cheaper.

You do not need a 500 watt power supply to OC, unless you are also loading in a ton of drives. A good 350-400 is plenty. That said, I would look at a slightly better power supply, such as antec truepower or seasonic super but not a top priority there.

Secondly, take a look at DFI's boards. I really like their CMOS reloaded and wish my board had that feature for tweaking. And OC results have been similiar to Abit and Asus.

Lastly, without a new vidcard and hdd you're gonna have definate bottlenecks. With that budget I'd probably buy and 865 and one of those two upgrades as well. I'd even drop to a 2.8C if needed to upgrade the other parts.

Yes, but you are talking about raising the price by over $100.

- $299.00 - AMS e-cube Barebone System for Socket 478 at 533/800MHz FSB Intel CPU, Model EG65
- $224.00 - P4 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology
- $141.00 - 512MB DDR PC-3500 of Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series

Well he's got his mind set on a SFF based PC now so here's what we got. It's pretty much final (he'll be ordering this tomarrow afternoon) but any last minute major advice is always welcome :) .

$260.00 - FIC Barebone System Model IC-VL67
$84.00 - Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 (he's not overclocking with this machine, he really won't be able to, so he doesn't need the best ram out there)
$224.00 - P4 3.0C 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail

Total comes to 568.00

What do you guys think?

THink you should go with that cool PIMPed out case in my recommendation above.... Aspire Dreamer II - $50

SO you can OC to 3.4-3.6Ghz, have 1Gb of NICE ram, serious (& quite) HSF cooler, and a cool looking case! :) but thats just me

Much easier to work on than those mini toasters. Thumb screws, etc, cool window. yada yada yada

If you want to save some money, you could pick up the 2.8c from newegg for $184. I received my 2.8c yesterday and received a SL6Z5 MO stepping and I am happy with it. My stable oc will probably be between 255 - 267 fsb on air. :)

Have you OC'd it yet? or you just pulling numbers out your ass!? :)

You never know you might get a dud that only does 3.0Ghz or a super chip that does 4Ghz!

This would be a better approach. Even with crappy PC3200 you can OC but with that cramped case your temps will be quite high. But if the case is set in stone then click that order button and let us know your results if you ever do decide to OC :)

I am not a noob, so of course I oced the 2.8c before giving an approximation of the oc. I havent had time to completely test it, but it looks to be a pretty decent chip.

damn it, listen to me (& smooth criminal - who agrees with me) and get a bigger case... more ram... nice HSF.... and OC like a MOFO!!
