Need USB Help

Hey guys, I was directed to this site to try fix my problems. Hope someone can help me

Anyways, I got an mp3 player for X-Mas. I hooked it up the first time and it worked fine. Then the second time, nothing. By my looking around in Device Manager, it looks like I have no drievrs installed. (Yellow question mark with the small, yellow exclamation mark infront of it) The disk that came with the mp3 player is for Windows 98SE and says it's for USB Drivers 1.0. Needless to say sicne I'm running XP and I'm guessing USB 2.0, it didn't install any drivers. I tried both USB ports on the front and all 4 USB ports on the back and nothing. By my understanding, it should be found automatically once it's plugegd in. Correct?

Also I can't update my Windows XP with Service Pack 2 so that is out of the question. Is that ANY way to get the drivers so I can use this mp3 player? Panasonic (mp3 player make) site doesn't seem to have anything and someone told me to check my motherboard's site, but I don't know how to see what model of motherboard I have.

Does anyone know what I can do? It's pretty lousy getting this for X-Mas and not being able to use it again.

Thanks

1.) Go into safe mode with the usb device unplugged
2.) Remove the failed device for the mp3 player
3.) remove everything that says "Usb Root Hub"
4.) Reboot
5.) Windows will redetect your usb ports
6.) Even if it doesn't tell you to, when it's done.. Reboot again
7.) Plug in device.

let us know what happens after that.

Once I restart that last time and before I put in the USB Cable, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" came up, asking me to install the software, which I don't have anywheer on my computer. I already used that wizard my computer, the disk that has drivers on it that came with the comp, my windows disk and my drivers disk with the 1.0 that came with the mp3 player.

Unplug everything usb and reboot the machine.
in device manager, click on th plus sign next to the usb ports to expand that category.
do any of the usb ports say the word "enhanced"?
if so, then you have a usb 2.0 port
click on that port and hit update drivers and let it search windows update for the drivers.
I have had this wok in the past on several computers.
It may work for you as well.
you can try plugging in the devices now and see if they work.
I hope this helps. It's difficult to troubleshoot when you're not right there sitting in front of the machine.

No it doesn't say enhanced anywhere, but the disk that came with the mp3 player says 1.0 and it doesn't install. The disk also says Windows 98SE and I have XP, would that even make a difference if both were USB 1.0?

Your computer is only capable of usb 1.0 then.
You shouldn't need any usb drivers from the cd b/c xp has them built in.
are you using a usb mouse?
do other usb devices work?

Also, why can't you update to sp2? are you running a bootlegged copy of xp?
I'm asking b/c I've seen bad bootlegs of xp. I had one person who's sound was always broken do to the mixer dll being corrupt in his bootleg.

There are other reports of bootlegged copies not working correctly.
so again, do you have any usb devices that work right now?

no, nothing else on my computer is USB right now. Yeah I guess I have a bootlegged copy. My old roommate installed it on my computer so I didn't think it was until SP2 wouldn't install.

Well, if you're going to be a pirate, go all the way and learn how to change the product key so you can install the service packs (I won't tell you how to do it),
or go out and buy XP. it's pretty cheap these days.

before all of that, borrow a usb mouse from someone just to see if the usb ports work.
a usb mouse should work even w/o any service packs.

What kind of computer is it and how old is it?

Isn't XP still like 140 bucks? I think I might know how to change the product kep but I just need to see if any of my friends will let me use theirs. I'll try the mouse thing cause mine uses USB or PS2 I think.
