Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the help. I just don't see why my power supply wouldn't work. Yes, it may be near the edge, but it is still enough given that the spec is at least 80% accurate... And power supplies are nothing new of a technology, it shouldn't be hard to match those specs that's been given. I know because I design power supply myself, but not for computers... :)

Yeah starting to see that it's a lost cause. One more try though:

I dont think the processor takes power from 12V, most like 3.3 or 5 volt. Correct me if I am wrong since I haven't done the research... Oh peak load on my supply is 550W. And where did you see that it is only at 25C?? Even with if only 70% of 300W is available, thats 210W... I honestly dont think the tolerance is that bad...

additionally, if you take a look at the spec on their site. http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1170&ID=1523#Tab0 They actually specified load at 100% of 520W on their graph... I am no where near that... I would say 70%-ish at max...

210W, as shown earlier, is not enough for your system. Do remember the de-rating curve man. Meaning that as a PSU gets hotter

To be fair, ALL PSU manufacturers, whether bad or good, will say or provide some sort of chart that says that their PSU is capable of handling the load.

Anyway, the 25C rating and peak load are the default assumption of most PSUs considering that 4 years ago, when that PSU was built, 25C was the recommended as well as the main temperature to rate a PSU at. Even today that's still going on. Only high-end PSUs were tested at 40C to 50C. But nowadays, we know better. 25C is not an acceptable temperature to test at. Considering that the entire Purepower series is Thermaltake's low quality and low budget brand, there's an extremely good chance that it was rated at 25C.

And yes, a majority of computer parts today to draw power from the +12V rail, including the CPU. What you were thinking of was true 5 years ago.

Despite what you may think, a PSU manufacturer can still fuck up a PSU design despite having years of experience with designing and making PSUs. Thermaltake's Purepower brand is well known among many Computer PSU enthusiasts for being of low quality and low budget. I've never seen a Thermatake Purepower PSU actually pass proper testing. In addition, there's no evidence whatsoever that the spec is 80% accurate. You have no idea how much power is actually available on the +12V rail, you have no idea what it can provide at 40 to 50C, you have no idea whether or not it can provide the rated power without out of spec ripple, and you have no ieda how long the system will last on such an old and low quality PSU. That's the reason why I cannot see your PSU not working for long.

The PSU may say that it has OCP but in my experience, OCP among low quality PSUs like the Purepower series rarely works right. So there's a good chance of hardware failure. Maybe not right away but there's a good chance of it happening over time.

That's it I'm done.

I guess I have no idea that it is actually a power supply also...? You have no idea that any of the power supply that you claim are good unless you have tested it. You have no idea that any of the power supplies reviews are even real... There is a line that you draw on assumptions, and I believe that my assumptions are more backed up as of now. My power supply is working fine and I have not seen bad reviews of it, the actual model of the power supply and not just Thermaltake...

But everything you are claiming is not backed up by ANYTHING. Unless you have personally used this particular part. How would you know if something is low quality if you never unscrewed the case and evaluate the parts and design? You have zero proof of anything you have just listed. At least my points are stated by the manufacterer themselves. That way, if I am wrong, it is the fault of thermaltake. Your claims have ZERO proof as of now. You just assumed that everything thermaltake makes are low quality. How do you know that thermaltake even designed it themselves? As far as I can tell, they might be a re-branded PSU by Corsair/Enermax/Antec?? How do you know? I have not made any claims as to the "quality" of the PSU just solely based on their reputation. You strongly imply that it is a low quality PSU with no proof. And as the actual user of this power supply, I have not seen any issue (Yes, I know it hasn't been tested with heavier load). But so far, I am happy with it. I guess I would have to put it to the test under a scope with full load to actually make a claim that is it in fact "low quality." Sorry, but I simply don't just assume things... no offense...

But to be honest, I did not need help with power supply. You pushed for this conversation. I understand that you are trying to help, and you did helped, and I appreciate it. But your claims are still not backed up...

I do know which PSU reviews are real by simply reading their methodology and the equipment they use to test. If no ATE, Oscope, and temperature testing, generally that PSU review is utterly useless. The PSU reviews done by JonnyGuru.com and hardOCP.com are generally the best I've seen. As such, I do not need to test it myself. I can clearly see from the work of the reviews, done by actual PSU engineers, whether or not a PSU is good.

I try to find reviews of it. I look at the specs of the PSU and compare it to other PSUs in the same price or wattage range. I look at who the actual manufacturer of the PSU is and research their past and present PSU designs.

It is true that I do not have actual hard proof that the PSU specs are not at least 80% accurate, how much power is actually on the +12V rail, whether or not the PSU is rated at 40 to 50C, whether or not it can provide the rated power without out of spec ripple. and how long the system will last with that PSU. But as I said, neither do you. Enginurd is right: PSU manufacturers will lie on the PSU label and box. So their word doesn't count for much. The sole exception to this is Seasonic and Corsair.

I don't. I just assume that any Purepower PSU is of low quality. AS Enginurd noted, Thermaltake's Purepower RX and Toughpower PSUs are of good quality. However, look up any real review of any Purepower PSU and you'll see that they're of low quality.

Well for one: Corsair and Antec do not make any PSUs at all. They outsource their designs and production to Seasonic, CWT, etc. Two: You can tell who made the PSU by looking at the insides of the PSU or looking at the UL number on the side of PSU label. Generally, a good majority of Thermaltake's PSUs are made by CWT. You can see that in any review where they open up a Thermaltake PSU.

All I have to say now is this: Have fun with your upgrade.

Dude, I don't see any PurePower reviews other than the RX. Where are you finding it? Like I said, I couldn't find any bad reviews that indicates low quality for the PurePower. Thanks for looking out, but I am still not convinced... :confused:

Hell, one of the sources that he mentioned was the [H] itself -- the same [H] that runs these forums!

The long story short is that the PSU you've been using wasn't a good choice three years ago and it now has three years' worth of wear and tear on it. If you're trying to use a new video card, assuming that you make no other upgrades at this time, the PSU may not last long. And should the PSU go bad, it has the potential to take everything else with it. Why take unnecessary chances when a decent PSU is only $50-$60?

No, my argument is about my PSU being sufficient for my setup, and it is sufficient. His arguement is that all PurePower are low quality. Again, his link to the PurePower reviews are not the same model. His claim is like saying all Honda Accords are the same, or all BMW 3 Series are the same... Please evaluate the actual product, and not just the name...
 
So my other username is banned for some reason. Probably due to inactivity... But I just had to come back to rub it in the faces of those who didn't know what they were talking about. My PSU and 9800GTX+ is STILL running strong almost 24/7 after a year and half. There goes the crappy Thermaltake PSU right??? Right, they were very knowledgeable consumers... Not... Dont make any false claims without any real knowledge... Ok you can ban this account now...
